Start retroarch > press load core > choose download core and download desired core(they're organized alphabetically so scroll down for nintendo, sony consoles etc.) > press load content to browse your phone memory for the game you wanted to play.
^Above steps are only needed the first time.
*If you're confused about which core to choose you may find this handy in helping you choose the best option(or learn anything about emulators really).
That used to work, but for quite a while "Download core" has just displayed an empty list.
Go to the online updater, hit the "Update Core Info Files", let it finish and try again.
It's worth noting that the Play Store version of RetroArch is a bit kneecapped by some Google restrictions, I don't know if that's the root of your issue but can try grabbing the apk from their website or from F-Droid.
If that doesn't work, try Lemuroid. It's an easier to use interface on top of a couple RetroArch cores
Update Core Info Files did it for me. Thanks!
Lemuroid has it's issues. You cannot use external save-files, and there's no way to access them from the system, other than through Lemuroid itself (maybe ADB would work). I still built a specific version of Lemuroid, from a PR from someone enabling external storage (this PR still remain unmerged after about a year). But even with this PR it's still kind of buggy. It doesn't properly detect external changes to my sav-files, and I have to reinstall the app for it to see any changes. Gaahh. Annoying.
Oh darn I forgot about this, yeah google screwed things up so now it's better to download from their homepage. Though I wish they'd keep their Itch or F-droid repositories up to date, most people don't use rss or even bookmarks these days so if anything's updated nobody knows.
The playstore version got screwed by google. Try the one on their website it works fine for me.
It doesn't even exist in the playstore, at least not anymore. So I'm on Fdroid, like most other people. LiveLM's tricked worked for me
