I have worked in retail on and off for a combined 25 months since 2016. Not once have I ever seen cheques being used. I'm not based in the US.
Why the fuck would people be using cheques in this day and age
Fraud attempts usually.
I had a friend who worked as a developer for a large bank. She said nearly all paper check transactions are scrutinized these days because they all trigger automated fraud flags.
