The sovereign citizen stuff confuses the hell out of me. I've no idea how people fall for this stuff.

Watching them on bodycam & court streams, it seems like they generally work backwards from getting their license to drive suspended.

They then latch on the SovCit nonsense because they think the magic words give them the right to "travel" on public roadways, unlicensed.

Then they get tazed, this really is the best part.

Hey, sometimes it’s over child support

[-] darvocet@infosec.pub 5 points 9 months ago

That really is the best part.

[-] NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Undoubtedly the best part. ACAB and all that but I can make exceptions.

The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend. But the enemy of mine who charges recklessly into conflict with my extremely powerful enemy armed with nothing but unsympathetic delusions is good schadenfreude

A bastard clock is right twice a day.

It is absolutely true that wealthy people use complex financial vehicles in order to avoid paying out for a variety of things. Sovcits are like idiots watching a chess game, wanting to play, and inventing checkers instead.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 4 points 9 months ago

Don't talk shit about checkers.

You're a solved game.

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 10 points 9 months ago

They are house cats. They want everything for free and don't feel they need to make any contribution whatsoever.

[-] Kite@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago

House cats are pretty successful at this, though. SovCits not so much.

[-] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

Cats are cute though, and mine caught a mouse once.

Which is pretty impressive for a purely indoor cat.

[-] Dkarma@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago

It's all based on "I never signed this contract you're holding me to". A huge part of our legal system is based on implied contracts. They take this to an absurd extreme.

[-] RedAggroBest@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

It's this fundamental lack of understanding that when a country doesn't claim you, you are stateless. They think if they just renounce citizenship because they never "signed the social contract", they can be their own 1-person country. This means that ofc they should be able to issue bonds and securities that have a direct USD exchange value of whatever they need it to have. They don't realize that the only reason the US deals with other countries is that they ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE COUNTRIES AS INDEPENDENT STATES

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I’d add an important addendum: countries only recognize states because it benefits them. Why do we recognize the PRC in America? Because they’re too powerful not to deal with. Same with everyone from Austria to Zimbabwe that we acknowledge. Maybe it’s because of force, maybe trade, maybe it’s because who else controls the island of Britain but the UK, and sometimes it’s to piss off someone claiming that land.

But there’s a reason we treat Kenya and Brazil differently from the Navajo Nation and there’s a reason we treat the Navajo Nation differently from Bob who thinks he’s his own country.

How do people fall for it?

Nearly 0 Critical Thinking Skills

OR

Fairly Serious Usage of Mind Altering Drugs +

Genuine Curiosity +

Desire to Learn More About the World +

Oops, youre surrounded by Right Wing Conservatives and/or Zany Religious Cults either online, in the real, or both.

More or less standard for how most people fall into most kinds conspiracy theory rabbit holes.

People go deeper and get hooked for two main reasons:

You feel like youre unearthing the secret truths you didnt learn in school, which is exciting.

The deeper you go and more you 'learn', the more it provides both a comprehensive framework to view nearly all the world through, functioning as basically an arcane ideology, giving the adherent purpose and identity.

And as Agent Smith told us... it is purpose that binds us, that drives us.
