Taiwan claiming an island 3km away from China and hundreds of kilometers from the Taiwanese mainland? Perfectly legitimate.

I mean the laws of international boundaries are kind of made up, so things tend to get complicated.

For example if "claiming an island 3km away from China and hundreds of kilometers from the Taiwanese mainland?" Is illegitimate, then how do you think that applies to China's claim over the 9 dash line?

"Hundreds of kilometers" is a bit of a stretch when it's less than 200km
