I wanna get into 2d games a bit more. Mainly things like RPGs or metroidvanias (or just single palywr games in general) For devices I can emulate older systems and I also have a switch. Any recommendations?

Terraria. It has RPG elements and is simply fantastic. Often available at a discount on Steam which I only recommend due to the extensive content available via the Workshop.

How do I best play it on an android machine?

I have a retroid device I'm getting games for.

Not familiar with that device, but https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Terraria_Wiki has all the available versions listed.
