This isn't just dumb, it's not even true. The US Flag Code says you can't wear an actual, literal flag. Not a pattern with the US flag on it.
Literally nobody has ever given a shit about the flag code except for when they think they can try to use it as a gotcha against political opponents.
Trump molested a flag then turned to the crowd and said "you dummies love this shit huh?" Thats pretty much the low bar for "disrespecting" a piece of cloth.
