I'd really like to get a first mechanical keyboard, but they seem too expensive to just experiment with until I find what works for me. What's a good, cheap, middle-of-the-road starter keyboard for a noob?

Just tossing my vote in for Keychron. I’ve poured more money into MechKeys than I care to admit and still use a Keychron q10 Alice daily at work. Being able to program fun/useful key combos and having full support for QMK and VIA is huge for their longevity. You can also branch out with new switches and key caps pretty easily.
