Isn't that kinda what the ancient aliens plot in those games actually makes humans out to be? Just kinda dumb apes who lucked into becoming the dominant species?
They were a slave race created by the psionic original species, stripped of their ESP capabilities so they could be easily manipulated with the mind control Apples. Solar storms destroyed the civilization of the "gods" and humans spread out and multiplied in their place.
