I think people see the resemblance to anime when they visit Japan is cause it's super clean in most Metropolitan areas and the rest of the world just isn't used to that.
And also, it's common for Manga and anime artists to visit actual areas in japan and take pictures to use as references in their works. So a lot of popular media is literally using irl areas, I visited a bunch of the sailor moon areas including the shrine when I went to visit.
Nice, wish I had thought about this while planning. The idea to visit the sailor moon locations was my fiancées when we got there, she's a sailor moon mega fan. I also proposed to her there in one of the locations from the show.
