Was it a Logitech mouse by any chance? The middle click has a tendency to wear out more Logitech mice than any other brand for me.
I have a cheap logitech mouse with a non working middle click, too
Spot on, G402 was the longest runner, but had issues on right and middle click. Steelseries rival didn't last long at all.
