For me, your first sentence sounds like 庆余年 (Joy of Life). Granted, it was actually my mum's pick, but I passively watched it while looking for episodes ahead of 8TV broadcast in 2020. She even looked for explanation videos online, which compared the episodes to the novel they were based upon. Overall it was an interesting watch.
Joy of Life is indeed on my list, together with The Mysterious Lotus Casebook The Ingenious One Ever Night
Now retreating to something light, so am trying Back from the Brink. Hope it is at least entertaining
