I believe the top level domain, the .ML was reclaimed by the country of Mali recently, who own it. It was just bad luck.
Is that what the ML means? I thought that it meant Machine Learning.
All two letter domains are for countries.
Even .tv which is Tuvalu
But what does the ML in this instance mean?
Mali. The country of Mali.
Lemmy is from Mali?
Anyone can register a domain anywhere as long as the country allows it. Lemmy is not from Mali in this case.

Nothing, it's just usually cheaper than a .com address
But it bothers me that it has no meaning. It must stand for something.
From my understanding, a pair of letters either stands for something or represents a country. Since Lemmy is not based in Mali, then ML must stand for something.
ML in lemmy.ml stands for Marxist Leninist, I am not joking. The creators and developers of lemmy.ml are pretty left leaning.
You might not be joking but you are assuming. Do you have a link to a statement by a site admin that says explicitly that is what it stands for? Otherwise you're just speculating, and there are other reasons someone would have chosen

If that's the case, I figured it was "Marxist-Leninist", which is what most of them prefer to describe themselves as.
And .com means communist.
Reminds me of the person who said that lemmy was communist because the groups were called communities

You're not just looking for conversation.
Unless you get a response from the site admins, anyone's answer is pure speculation. No one is going to be able to say, definitively, why .ml was chosen, except the site admins.
My theory is:
.mldomains used to be offered for free. So they madelemmy.mlfor free, as it was just a toy project. Then, they upgraded to the paid.mldomain (which is how they managed to avoid the recent free.mlpurge).The "its Marxism-Leninism" could be true, but unless you get an answer from a site admin, everyone asserting that it's true is talking out of their ass. They don't know any more than you or I know.

@favrion @1stTime4MeInMCU tankies is derogatory term of communists who regardless of reality excuse everything that authoritarian governments do. It was coined to describe Stalinists who defended USSR rolling in tanks on Hungary in 1958. They're the mirror image of MAGA cultists who will be the first to defend Trump when he inevitably goes ahead and shoots someone in the middle of 5th Ave.
My 1st interaction with a tankie was a Canadian youtuber who made videos defending North Korea, not satire
