I actually wouldn't be surprised if they tried something like this in the US. Absenteeism has been pretty bad since COVID and I'm sure they'd love something this punitive to the poor to try and "solve" the problem

Eh, half of the US government’s goal for decades has been to fully dismantle the public education system so I don’t think they really care about encouraging attendance. They want it to be low.

in the US they just jump straight to cops and prosecution. though I don't know if its this strict most places
