I asked a dentist once. Their opinion was it was most likely the dentist not endorsing because toothpaste isn't really needed, just the scrubbing action is needed more!
i brought up how i detest toothpaste to a dentist while having a wisdom tooth pulled, and they said the best routine for me is to just brush as much as i can be arsed, take flouride pills, and swish my mouth with water after every meal.
