A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The best ones are thoughts that many people can relate to and they find something funny or interesting in regular stuff.

I'm new here so I don't understand how downvotes work here, people seem to downvote everything? I think all my comments over the last few days all have a downvote or two. I don't understand why people downvote shit (ha) they simply think is weird.
I've downvoted things that are misogynistic or racist, but not things that are just weird.. is there an algorithm that's affected by upvotes/downvotes?
Downvotes are dang near a placebo here. The average Lemmy user seems to vote emotionally and often vindictively. The good news is, it practically doesn't matter. It's just an impotent misuse of the platform.
The users that know how to (and want to) make the platform work for them will instead leverage the block system. I've got a large assortment of users, communities, and instances blocked in order to curate my experience. And in doing so, I find myself using downvotes pretty sparingly.
Good to know, thanks so much! I have blocked so many instances already lol.. just when I think I've gotten all the hentai and anime communities, another one pops up..
