The Red Bull driver conducted another press conference - away from the FIA gaze - where Autosport asked him if he was reconsidering his future in F1, giving a sensational response

I don't follow drivers much, I'm more of a team kind of guy. But, I half way believe him. Max is a quirky guy with his father's temper and this is not the first time he has expressed a "Fuck F1" attitude. I note that the rest of the drivers have set a secret meeting to see what they can do to support him. Get out the popcorn, because I don't see a way out of a confrontation between the FIA and the drivers.

Yeah he has said several times before that he already has achieved his dream by winning the championship. He’s mostly still in F1 for fun. And he also said before that he wants to win WEC. So it’s definitely not a empty threat.

The FIA sanctions the WEC too, so I don't know how that would work out under this particular circumstance.

A WEC team has three drivers. He could probably negotiate a contract where he never has to speak in front of the press.

Ha! I guess that's possible. But, it's more probable that he just takes a year sabbatical

[-] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

A sabbatical where he keeps racing probably. There are championships that aren’t directly governed by the FIA. Like IndyCar or Super Formula.

I'm just going to mention this because it's funny, but you know...Kimi raced NASCAR...

[-] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

That's true. Although it's probably worth noting that both Alonso and Hamilton also said they wouldn't be in F1 long, yet here we are.

I have no doubts Max would go back to F1 eventually. I don't think any other types of race provide as much adrenaline and competition as F1. He'll do some endurance racing, some rallying, he might even have a crack at the Daytona 500, and when he did all that, he will close his eyes and long for an F1 car.

Because nothing gets a racer going more than sweeping through Eau Rouge at 280km/h, barreling through the chicane to curva grande flat out or taking the final corner in Monaco so fast you hit the wall yet still take pole.

It does indeed not look like he's going to let this go

[-] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Why should any of them? The FIA is treating grown men, who are also millionaires, like children.
