Edit - I misread "alt" as "ai" and it colored my interpretation of the article. I still don't like generative AI and I am in favor of manually writing alt text when possible but this is probably one of the rare cases where AI can actually be used for good.

Original comment - I wish Mozilla would quit trying to chase AI. I just want a browser that works properly and respects my privacy. I gave them a monthly donation for years but I stopped when they started announcing AI shit.

Alt text is something that might not seem important to the majority of people, and often people can't be bothered to write it, but it can be crucial for people who have troubles with sight. This is an initiative that makes PDFs more accessible, and I think better a11y is good

You wanna volunteer to put alt text for screen readers on everything then? Some people don't have the luxury to use a browser that "just works properly" and still perceive everything the web wants to tell them the same you do. AI is a shitty energy sink with plagiarism built into it in a lot of places but this use case is accessibility and not writing books for uncreative people
