We could have voted it away. And it would have been way easier than the alternatives. But we chose not to.

But since we didn’t organize to vote it away, I’m not sure how we’re going to organize a general strike. And anything else is so difficult and so messy and has very little guarantee of improving anyone’s conditions.

We could have voted it away.

Lmfao, news flash: it's already here, has been for a while.

Never mind that never in history has tyranny ever been voted away. To think otherwise you must completely misunderstand what tyranny and fascism are, as well as how the current establishment functions.

[-] Perhapsjustsniffit@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 weeks ago

Vote it away. It's been a joke for so long and people cling to the idea that it works so badly. I am Canadian. We are also past voting. The systems of government must be torn down. They are corrupt and do not work for the people.

[-] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 weeks ago

Hear hear..

I'm in the UK and we have the same situation + monarchy, for added funsies. I keep thinking people are getting enough of a glimpse behind the curtain at the fact that the system wasn't designed to serve them, but to centralise power in the hands of very few people who exploit the rest to continuously strengthen their own power, but part of those efforts are the propaganda, and it just goes to show how well it works that despite so much ugly truth being revealed over and over, some people still see "my team vs your team" as the only way to exist. It's both sad and very scary.

[-] squid_slime@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

snap, also in the uk, are you in a political party?

[-] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Hey neighbour.

And no, as an anarchist, I'm not a member of any party.

[-] squid_slime@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

Sick I attend a local anarchist group called radical learning based in devon.

Solidarity comrade.

[-] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Solidarity!

I just looked up that group, I'm assuming this is it? I've only skimmed the page and will give it a good read in a bit, but that's really fucking cool, I wish I wasn't hundreds of miles away lol but it's always good to see leftists organising in this country! I'm in the process of moving, not sure exactly where to yet, but once that's happened I'm hoping to find some anarchist and communist folks locally to wherever I am, having that kind of community is so valuable.

[-] squid_slime@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

Looks interesting but no not that group, we're based on signal and WhatsApp and do weekly meeting to organise around local issue as well as global. Its more of an active social. Currently we have plans for a Stop reform demo as theyre coming to Exeter on Saturday and end of the month a counter demo countering a fascist demo.

If you end up in the devon area let me know and I will have you added to our group but if not then good luck I hope you find a good space and do some revolutionary stuff ✊

[-] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Oh wow, wild miss there.. 😂 but your group sounds even more like my kind if thing tbf.. I hope the counter demo goes well, stay safe, and bash some fash.

I don't think I'll end up down south again, but I will try and remember this conversation (I've saved it!) and potentially check back to see if you'd know of any local connections wherever it might be or have any advice for finding comrades. I have a lot of my own shit to try and get together, but I really hope that this move whenever it eventually happens will be an opportunity to really build a good local support and affinity network.

[-] squid_slime@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

reach out whenever comrade my matrix account is linked in my profile and hope your eventual move goes well.

Edit: if you move to a city youll have no issue, anarchists do an amazing job postering. or sign up to SUTR attend a local rally or demo youll find comrades. dont get to involved with SUTR as they are SWP and use the brand to funnel money from unions while also outsourcing union work which creates a lazy leadership. rant over lol.

[-] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Will do, and appreciate the info, thanks!

[-] Smith6826@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

We could have voted it away.

Don't forget gerrymandering and other fraudulent methods of deciding victory like the electoral college being baked into this diseased system.

They only give the illusion of choice.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

None of that stopped Biden from winning last time when people actually showed the fuck up to the polls.

[-] Smith6826@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The 2-parties in this monopolized system are owned by the same corporate interests and mega-rich. Everything is by their design. We never had a choice.

The system will never work for us, because it's working as intended. We need to annihilate it and start from scratch. There is no fixing it from the inside and hoping the next person isn't just another lesser evil to vote for.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

How does enabling a fascist help us on this path?

[-] Smith6826@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago

How does enabling a fascist help us on this path?

Are you responding to the wrong person? Who's talking about enabling fascists?

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago

How does not voting and allowing a fascist to win allow us to dismantle the system?

[-] Smith6826@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

How does not voting and allowing a fascist to win allow us to dismantle the system?

Who the hell said to not vote? I'm saying it's not the cure for this diseased system that we need to dismantle and rebuild. Vote on that 1 day, then organize with like-minded people to enact some real change every other day.

Please don't twist my words.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee -1 points 2 weeks ago

When you reply to someone talking about people sitting out to vote with excuses for them it kind of looks like you're making excuses for not voting.

[-] Smith6826@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

When you reply to someone talking about people sitting out to vote with excuses for them

Never said anything remotely close. I'm just pointing out that it's not going to fix anything in a system designed to subjugate and oppress the peasants. It's just evil vs slightly less evil, every time.

Emphasis on, vote on that 1 single day, but work to do something that will have actual impact for the rest of the 4 years of your (until further notice) free time until the next sham election, or hopefully, a new, fair system is being born of revolution.

[-] squid_slime@lemm.ee -3 points 2 weeks ago

just no. god damn liberals!!!

[-] SARGE@startrek.website -3 points 2 weeks ago

general strike.

Oh you sweet, summer child...

[-] nonailsleft@lemm.ee 7 points 2 weeks ago

No no no I'm sure you know those that couldn't even be bothered to go vote, those people are now getting ready to man the barricades

[-] Lemmy_Cook@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Exactly. I'm sure they are...

[-] SARGE@startrek.website -1 points 2 weeks ago

I more meant it as "a general strike wouldn't work"

Lefty Memes

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of the "ML" influence of instances like lemmy.ml and lemmygrad. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, and discussion go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low-quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme)

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" seen on lemmygrad and more specifically GenZedong (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

(if you are reading the rules to apply for modding this community, mention "Mantic Minotaur" when answering question 2)

6. Don't idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.
