What the hell are those guns on the plane?
Since airplanes back then were a curious combination of flammable material traveling through high wind speed, I too would say that's a flare gun. A direct hit would be effective.
The nearest one, if I had to guess, is probably a flare gun. The one in back, uh, maybe an MG14? I'm no firearms expert.
Certainly flares. You couldn't shoot a monster bullet/shell like that even if it was black powder.
