It's not very common but some people do have metabolic disorders or thyroid issues that make it extremely difficult to not gain weight, no matter what they do.

It's anecdotal but I knew a man who joined the Navy at 18 - thin as a rail. He had some sort of reaction to one of the jabs he was given during boot camp.

He put on 200+ pounds in less than a year - he spent only a few days in the hospital, so no months in bed just eating. Once he was discharged from the hospital and Navy, he went home and went to work. Just living like he had before but just kept putting on weight.

No diet he tried worked. Even exercise and dieting (which works for most people) made no difference.

His case is definitely an outlier but it does happen.
