For f*&% sake, I'm using JPEG XL on my website for some high res images that are amazingly well compressed using it, and especially to reduce the repository size on Codeberg. Only now discovered that only my niche main browser, Zen, renders them. What a stupid decision; their compression of high quality images is superior. Perfect to use alongside AVIF which does better in low quality images and illustrations and the like, or PNG which is best at preserving images containing text such as screenshots.

The title is misinformation. It should be "someone made a RAT downloadable on Arch Linux" because the Arch User Repository (AUR) ≠ official repository. From the Arch wiki:

The Arch User Repository (AUR) is a community-driven repository for Arch Linux users. It contains package descriptions (PKGBUILDs) that allow you to compile a package from source with makepkg and then install it via pacman. The AUR was created to organize and share new packages from the community and to help expedite popular packages' inclusion into the extra repository. This document explains how users can access and utilize the AUR.

A good number of new packages that enter the official repositories start in the AUR. In the AUR, users are able to contribute their own package builds (PKGBUILD and related files). The AUR community has the ability to vote for packages in the AUR. If a package becomes popular enough — provided it has a compatible license and good packaging technique — it may be entered into the extra repository (directly accessible by pacman or from the Arch build system).

Warning: AUR packages are user-produced content. These PKGBUILDs are completely unofficial and have not been thoroughly vetted. Any use of the provided files is at your own risk.

Brave's a bunch of marketing/advertising driven crypto"currency" i.e., pyramid scheme peddlers desperate for greater fools.
↳ “Kill yourself.” —Bill Hicks.

On a computer either use uBlock Origin-included LibreWolf for stability and privacy, Zen browser for power users, and on Android one can use Fennec; all of them Firefox derivatives.

I believe Gates and Buffet are sincere.

One cannot be sincere / ethical and be a billionaire simultaneously. If Gates were sincere Microsoft wouldn't be the monopoly it is now.

Bollocks. If these rich assholes felt guilty and inclined towards altruism they'd have spent it already instead of "pledging".

"[…] Furthermore, their supposed philanthropy isn't just them giving money away no-questions-asked. More often than not they aim to benefit their coffers and/or virtue signal their “conscience”:

  • “They are moving away from unfettered, no-strings-attached giving and toward increased donor control over organizations, and are blurring the lines between private investment and public benefit.” —Gilded Giving 2020, by Chuck Collins and Helen Flannery [17].

  • “Your "Giving Pledge" has a loophole that renders it practically worthless, namely permitting pledgees to simply name charities in their wills. I have found that most billionaires or near billionaires hate giving large sums of money away while alive and instead set up family-controlled foundations to do it for them after death. And these foundations become, more often than not, bureaucracy-ridden sluggards. These rich are delighted to toss off a few million a year in order to remain socially acceptable. But that's it.” —Robert Wilson to Bill Gates, 2010 [18] […]" —What if I paid for all my free software? | arscyni.cc

For me AutoKey is absolutely essential to my workflow. I have tons of text expansions and shortcuts to "remap" keys. E.g., respectively, typing dAt expands into 2025-05-08, 13:47:40 CEST, and pressing alt + k simulates the arrow down key.

Secondly there's XScreenSaver which has so many wonderful (mathematical) visualizations that it would be a damn shame if these eventually get lost as Wayland gets more adoption.

None of these have Wayland alternatives as far as I know. For text expansion there's Espanso, but it doesn't support keyboard shortcuts yet.

Popularity ≠ superiority. Proprietary text document formats is yet another proof of Microsoft's crookedness—their subpar products only able to stay afloat by unethical anti-competitive behaviour.

Pump-and-dump schemes, fraud, ransomware, multi-level marketing, spam, incentivizing selfishness, greed, and general unethical behaviour, buying elections, quasi Nazis creating their own coins, et cetera. In my opinion, over the years the evidence has piled up tall enough to show that crypto"currencies" are an overal detriment to society.

It therefore surprised me to discover that behind the ♡ donation button on top of most Lemmy instances except for Beehaw, there is an option to donate "crypto". This sets a bad example. Thoughts?

Your games on Linux might unknowingly run slower than they need to. My games had inconsistent FPS between different sessions—smooth 144 FPS between stuttering ± 120 FPS—and I couldn't figure out why because all the logs indicated it was running on my dedicated GPU.

First I assumed it was a caching problem due to running distributed computing projects 24/7 [finding primes, not crypto"currencies", don't worry], but it turns out it was in fact arbitrarily using the desktop CPU's integrated graphics instead of the GPU.

Via the Steam game launch options command below one can force the use of one's dedicated GPU—0 or 1 depending on one's PC.

They should've picked LibreWolf which ships with uBlock Origin. Brave is a disappointing choice because it supports multi-level marketing pyramid schemes which says enough about their moral compass.

I'm looking for a song video clip which features a very close up shot of female lips. At a certain point it becomes sexual without being explicit, and it is suggested that the woman bit off a mans penis.

What is love? (beehaw.org)
submitted 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) by arsCynic@beehaw.org to c/askbeehaw@beehaw.org

No seriously, what does love mean to you? The love of your child, the love of your partner(s), monogamy, polyamory, (non) consensual non-monogamy, infatuation, limerence, heartbreak. The love of one's hobby, the love for an object, the love of an idea, et cetera. Whatever it is that comes to mind goes.

Finally going after vermin instead of schoolchildren. Good. Slow progress is still progress. Hopefully, consequently, toppling the toxic system that produces these vermin in the first place.
