Another month gone, another month older, another month at work.

𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚

I've been reading Great Teacher Onizuka and so far it's almost exactly 1:1 like the anime... which means, the horribly aged ableism is about to hit, beyond all the other problematic stuff. Beyond that, it remains as fun as I remember. It's neat. B+

π€π§π’π¦πž

Gundam SEED has managed to make it across its entire 50 episode run without making me too annoyed or in amused disbelief over the nonsense happening on the screen. Really, it's... alright. I wish Kira and Lacus were less wooden characters. Athrun and Cagalli were significantly more interesting and 500x more likeable than Ange and Tusk in the trainwreck of a show named Cross Ange, who used them as a ~~self-plagiarism~~ source of inspiration B-

SEED Destiny too... has been pretty alright so far. However, I do like Shinn's character. That man has definitely every reason to be as angry as he is... but I am fairly confident the show won't do too much with that. Speaking of Cagalli, wow, that is a massive downgrade in character writing compared to S1. Supposedly, there's IRL drama that caused that! C+

CITY is Nichijou 2, not much else to say about it. It doesn't quite live up to the predecessor, and with the shorter show run it probably never will, but it is undeniably still a good show. A

Dragon Ball Z - almost done with the Freeza fight. That was... pretty long. But consistently good, even though some previously impactful stuff, like people dying, is not much of a big deal now. A

Ranma 1/2 is also consistently entertaining. Not much else to say about it at this point. A

π–πžπ¬ππžπ«π§ π€π§π’π¦πšππ’π¨π§

I knew Gravity Falls was always a highly regarded show... but I did not expect it to be this good. There's an iconic cast of characters, compelling storytelling... it's just very very competent at what it sets out to do. A+

π‘πžπ₯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 π•π’ππžπ¨ π†πšπ¦πžπ¬

A challenging Super Robot Wars game in the year of our Lord 2025? One that has, so far, good writing? One that is available in a language I speak? Y is shockingly good. I've been on a binge this weekend. A+

Manga

The only one I read recently was Harukaze no Zephyr, the continuation of The Stranger by the Shore. Unfortunately it has 2 issues. The first one is a pretty bad scene in the manga right at the start, tho it never happens again after that, the second one being that it is only translated until chapter 21, the next chapters are not translated because the manga is being officially sold in the US :( so I had to read some tumblr posts about the newest chapters.

Other than that I want to get back into Chainsaw Man part 2, I stopped reading it more than a year ago. I'll probably rewatch the anime and re-read part 1 which I have all the manga volumes.

Anime

I think this is the first time I'm watching so many at a time.

Gachiakuta is pretty good so far. I knew nothing about it other than that a lot of people really like it, so I was surprised class relations are a big part of the story. The art style reminds me of Soul Eater which I like a lot, so that's a plus too. Also, it's great seeing actually well designed black characters in anime, the ones shown until now all look extremely cool.

The Summer Hikaru Died is my favorite of the season right now, I love the gay horror anime and want to see where it goes.

One Piece continues to surprise me. Egghead is great so far even to it started to slow down the pace in the anime and I lost count of how many times I cried in this arc, Kuma is definitely one of the best characters in the story. I just wished Oda would not fucking sexualize Bonney.

Dandadan outside of the few really bad scenes is genuinely great and fun. Okarun and Momo are too cute together πŸ˜–. The rock concert episode was amazing and I have been listening to that song ever since lol.

I have also just watched Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. I had previously watched season 1 when it launched and the movie too, but I decided to rewatch it since I didn't remember a lot of it and honestly season 1 only gets interesting to me at the end specially during Todou's fight with Itadori, the movie I really liked both times and season 2 I thought was great from beginning to end, specially during the Shibuya Incident arc. Most of the fight scenes were great and the animation was incredible. My only complaints are that Nobara didn't get much screen time and didn't get to shine, and that there's some fascist rethoric by a few characters that is just presented as wrong but never confronted properly, mainly from Getou and the girl that was Todou's teacher.

Other than that I want to start To Be Hero X, Lord of Mysteries and The Apothecary Diaries, which are all Chinese and look great.

Manga

Dai Dark ohh my goddd skeletons and necromancy in space. The bones are their money. Shimada Death is everything. Its surprisingly cute? And silly, a little messy, reminds me of saturday morning cartoon villains. Finally got to the "failed son" character. Meepswich.

The Summer Hikaru Died the anime adaption is surprisingly really good, but I am impatient and started reading it. Wowowow

Make The Exorcist Fall In Love They got around to the final? deadly sin devil. I love the hell arc and all the demon girlies. Big moment in the plot so we'll see where it goes.

Chainsawman Dennis is in trouble yet again, will Reze show up? (Probably not 😒) people are saying blood devil's incarnation is going to appear but idk.

The Helpless Saint and the Powerless Princess a very sweet little isekai about two women where they have to kiss and hold hands to use magic.

Kagurabachi I swear I will get past the first five chapters. Eventually :)

Anime!!

Gachiakuta I keep forgetting the name so I call it "the trash anime." I didnt want to watch it at first, but it has grown on me. It will do for now, the characters are interesting.

Iron Blooded Orphans the first season I think maybe 8/10, the way they handled some plot elements kinda bugged me. Some amusing key moments. Season 2 not as good so far but we'll see.

Anne Shirley the champion of the summer, Anne Shirley, is now an adult and keeps passing on potential suiters so she can write sad romance stories and adopt cats. 10/10

Edit -- I totally forgot I watched Pom Poko for the first time, and of course it made me cry.

the new panty stocking season wahooooooo ! I love my gals

the english dub is somehow even better this time (one of those rare shows where you gotta watch the dub).

This month I checked off two classics I never saw in Akira and Evangelion (+ End of Evangelion movie), and more recently started to watch Lycoris Recoil. The second hour of Akira was such an escalating ride also props for the caricature depiction of the politicians as completely incapable, self interested, and petty. I heard the manga takes the story further. Speaking of manga I definitely want to read Evangelion to see the differences with the series and focus more on the details I missed. Given how some Eva eps were mostly multimedia collages I’m really curious how they handle those parts in the manga, it could be really neat looking. Lycoris Recoil is a friendship and action series that Kojima endorsed when it was coming out. Nice change of mood after the last stuff.

Animation alone or with mom

I finished I'm In Love With The Villainess and ended up landing on Urara Meirocho as my morning anime. I'll probably finish Urara on Wednesday, two days from now.

I saw individual episodes of Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost (E2), Makeine (E2), Tokyo Mew Mew (E15), Futari wa Precure (E23), and Angelic Layer (E12).

With my mom I'm still watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level season 2, Ojamajo Doremi, The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, Squid Girl season 2, Samurai Champloo, and The Boondocks. We have just one episode of Champloo left.

We haven't made any progress on Steins;Gate, but have made some progress on CITY the ANIMATION, which my mom is evidently growing fond of, and why shouldn't she? It's a fun 'un.

We also saw the first episode of Long Story Short by BoJack Horseman's creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg. Long Story Short was... fine, I guess...? Mom liked it more than I did. Aside from just the vibe of Seppolandic "adult animation" usually being kinda cringe aside from The Boondocks, I think a big part of the problem with Long Story Short for me is that Bob-Waksberg made the deliberate choice not to mention the Zionist entity directly in the show, so it's just a huge fucking elephant in the room in this show about a deeply religious, decently-well-off Jewish family in Seppoland.

If my mom wants to keep watching Long Story Short on her own then that's her problem, but I'm not joining her insofar as Bob-Waksberg gives me liberal Zionist vibes.

Animation on Blorptube

Garg is still showing K-ON! on Blorptube; we've finished season 1 and now we're making our way through season 2 still on Monday evenings. Our dear @AernaLingus@hexbear.net ended up missing out on a few weeks so I rewatched most of those episodes with her alone as well, which was a lot of fun.

On Blorptube I also ended up seeing two of the three episodes of Gunsmith Cats, and I saw the short film compilation Manie Manie: Neo Tokyo, and I rewatched the lovely Kase-san and Morning Glories.

I myself held watch parties for the "fanime" shows SPARKLE ON RAVEN: The Life of DrillGirl and My Jungle Book, Your Year!, which were both a blast. Fanime is seriously underrated. Now I've returned to Albert BarillΓ© with Once Upon a Time... The Americas, which @Redcuban1959@hexbear.net has subtitled for us, and I must say I was impressed with the first five episodes' depictions of Native history, up to and including depicting Cahokia.

I also saw the short film Paradise and I think part of an episode of Love, Death and Robots on Blorptube. And, as I've been doing for many months now, I've been organizing watch parties for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. We've wrapped up season 5 and are now making our way through season 6.

Edit: Oh, and how could I forget Fireman Sam, it's a classic! I've been using it as "dead air material" for months. I hope editing this comment doesn't re-ping Aer and Cuban though...

Manga

I finished volume 2 of The World of Narue and started reading volume 3. I finished volume 4 of the Norwegian translation of Ranma Β½ and started reading volume 5. On my phone I'm reading the Esperanto translation of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch: Aqua, which was made by the same folks who did the Esperanto translation of Sailor Moon.

My mom and I are still reading The Demon Girl Next Door volume 6, though we aren't making much progress. In fact did we read it at all in the past month? I'm not sure. I'm lousy at making note of when I read things with her compared to by myself, though even by myself I often forget to note when I read things.

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

Dandadan is so fucking peak except for the few scenes where it is unforgivably bad. Also has banger OPs.

[-] Rojo27@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Anime

Continuing to enjoy DanDanDan. Also been watching Gachiakuta. Mixed feelings on this one as it was really hyped due to the manga (I might read it eventually). I don't quite know what it is that is holding me back from loving it because there is a lot I do like in so far as the characters and how powers work in this world. Maybe its the art style?

Manga

Chainsawman continues to deliver. Not much more to say about it that hasn't already been said.

[-] forcefemjdwon@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

I'm watching Momentary Lily with a friend. It really picked up at episodes seven and eight. Hinted at in episode 2 ("That day, I met an unforgettable, lifelong friend.")

spoiler

My head... Why do I see Yuri-chan?

You still sound like you even without your memories.

"I don't remember anything, but I'm Renge." "You're not. Onee-chan died."

I don't remember anything, yet I have memories that I don't recognize.

I know what you are, Renge-chan.

Other than that, very much enjoying The Summer Hikaru Died and Watanare. Hoping to start up some manga and possibly light novels this month.

Hello nerds, this month i had time to i got up to date with a bunch of stuff

Manga

Chainsawman part 2 : its been pretty good denji-just-like-me 10/10

spoilerI really like how the latest arc has set up Yoru as the final antagonist of Part 2, i really like how the previous arcc have been slowing power her up until now and i wonder what is Death devil's plan now that she kinda stopped the prophesy but replaced it by something just as bad, Also maybe Nayuta will return now that Death devil is on the same side as Denji

SpyXFamily: i got up to chapter 107, its been pretty good, i liked the backstory arcs for mr henderson and martha 8/10

Anime

Apothecary Diaries: i finished season 1 and im starting season 2, its about solving mysteries in ancient not china with some slowburn, i really like maomao she is a really fun protagonist and i like all the court politics she has to deal with 10/10 show

To Be Hero X: its a really good donghua, i started the first arc a while also but only this last week i got up to date with the whole thing and i love it, they split the show into arcs and each one has their own protagonist and its like a chinese version of the boys but good and with idol celebrity culture. 9/10

Dandadan: its pretty good 8/10

[-] Llituro@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

the animation in the latest To Be Hero X was really something, it's been a fun weekly.

[-] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago

I didn't get into Apothecary diaries that much over the first three eps, but then I picked it up again and watched the rest of the first season in a day and a bit. It's fun, it's just enough palace intrigue that I can follow along without being boring (normally that kind of genre turns me right off). My heart also melts every time Gaoshun calls Maomao 'Xiaomao'.

Tried watching Bofuri but there wasn't a 'hook'. It just seemed like a pretty standard power scaling isekai. If anyone can vouch that it mixes up the formula beyond like, ep 5 i think I made it to, then I may revisit

My offline friends watch a lot of anime too but I don't really listen to their reccos as such.

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

I actually watched that last week and it doesn't really. I did find it really funny though. And I liked the fact that there werent really any villains in the story, it was just kind of a chill feel good 'look at this character making friends and being obscenely strong in the goofiest ways' sort of thing.

[-] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago

Ah k, yeah figured as much. I guess it's a cosy watch and the characters were fun. Thanks for the info

[-] AIf@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago

@AIf@hexbear.net would like to watch db daima goku-halal

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

Got super busy at work so I slowed down on my anime and manga.

Mostly just read Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. There's a lot of Miyazaki's obsession with aviation in the art. Quite a delight to read a manga with a large page format, too. I haven't seen the movie in ages, so I'll need to rewatch that one!

Gundam SEED/Gundam SEED Destiny

I think I'd rather rewatch Cross Ange. It's at least got an amazingly bad thing going on with it.

The pink ~~Zaku II~~ ZAKU Warrior is fucking dope, though.

[-] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

Continuing with There's No Freaking Way I'll be Your Lover! Unless..., for a problematic harem anime it's actually pretty good, Mai being the literal worst aside. Turns out all you need to do to make harem anime good was make it yuri instead. Heavily qualified B.

The second season of Dandadan continues being absolutely fantastic across the board. It came out of the gate swinging and has only escalated from there. Completely unqualified A.

For something new I started watching in the past couple of weeks, Call of the Night absolutely blew me away. On the surface it looks like any other hetero romance anime and one might even expect it to be a harem show, but it's not any of that at all: the MC is close to being aro/ace, his response to the sexy vampire isn't "I want her" or even "I want to be with her" but "I want to be like her", and the show has semi-frequent frank discussions of sexual orientation and the MC's lack thereof. The characters also struggle to articulate depression and ennui and some sort of neurodivergence and masking and the dissatisfaction and alienation that results from this, and both Ko Yamori and Nazuna complain about and discuss shitty and toxic things men do. I'm nearly caught up with the second season and for all I know either it or somewhere later in the manga it could jump the shark and wreck all these good things, but goddamn if this isn't a very surprising gem of a series so far. It even managed to have a gender nonconforming character who's not any kind of stereotype, which is a low bar to clear but I feel like I can count on one hand the number of anime series I've seen that don't slam face first into that bar. It's like someone made a straight romance story queer and also not a romance story at all but more just a story about two depressed gremlins hanging out and being harangued by their friends who want them to hook up. Cautious A, just because I keep expecting it to randomly do something horrible that ruins everything retroactively.

[-] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

Ruri Rocks. A 'Girls doing cute things' anime about Geology. Very laid back and decently educational.

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

I started watching Demon Slayer because my sibling needed someone to go see the upcoming movie with and I've never seen any of it before. So far, most of the way through season 1, I like all the characters except the blond one.

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

I like all the characters except the blond one.

I only have 2 episodes left of Space Brothers, and then I'm free. The general plot is fine but the pacing is way too slow, and it has a bunch of weird mid-episode cliffhangers that get resolved by end-of-episode. I imagine these are chapter cliffhangers and so it gets this from being a too-faithful adaptation of the manga. Also, despite featuring an entirely adult main cast, it was unable to avoid making one of them a creep, as a 30-year-old astronaut has a 16-year-old love interest. 3/10

Watching Dandadan as it comes out, this season has been pretty good, still not beating the allegations. 7/10.
