There are loads of variants of chess like this. There's a similar variant to this called Horde chess where white has no pieces but 36 pawns instead, and black has a normal setup. But there are some quite fun/whacky variants on e.g. www.chess.com/variants.

I think that amount of pawns is pretty much what you need to make it winnable. Maybe a few less if you take black's pawns away. Pretty sure this one, as presented, is a unwinnable, which... kind of undermines the point they're trying to make.

surely only the 4 front black pawns can advance, all other pawns are locked in place by the polarising media owned by the elite

unless the 4 white pawns at the back become queens and can advance in any direction, because they're glamourous trendsetters from wealthy backgrounds who also want to take down the elite

Once you show the horsies that they're being treated like disposable animals it's gg

I remember playing something similar back in the day, the difference was that the pawn side got to move twice each turn.

And if a pawn gets promoted, it's a class traitor and becomes your opponent's piece?

[-] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

how about that counts as breaching the armoury and having access to their weapons?

[-] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 months ago

Variations like this are pretty standard for chess students.

What happens if one of the ruling class pieces gets behind the pawns, couldn't they pick them off slowly?

[-] yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 months ago

I don't think it would be particularly fun.

Sacrifice a tower (I forgot the English name) to get access to a corner, then get the queen in the lower left/right corner within 3 moves.

Then pick up the pawns one after the other from behind. The pawns themselves cannot move quickly to the other side because they need to keep a "triangle" formation for safety which requires time to build up.

[-] HakunaHafada@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 months ago

The word you're looking for is Rook.

[-] Pringles@sopuli.xyz 0 points 3 months ago

I'm not sure a sacrifice is even needed. You just need to get the queen to the backline and wreak havoc.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

If they stay in formation you can always force a sacrifice. The pawns will always capture at least one piece.

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 3 months ago

Yeah, but you can kill off like three elites towards one side and you'll have open access to get behind the pawns with a queen or rook and just lay waste unchecked.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

Yeah, that's what the first comment above was saying. The one I responded to was wondering if a sacrifice is necessary, and I'm pretty sure it 100% is. It's still trivial to win, but you do need to lose a piece.
