I created this community as shrinkflation is getting really bad in Canada, especially in grocery stores.

This community is probably going to lean towards being Canada-centric, but shrinkflation posts from all over are welcome!

Shrinkflation is defined as a reduction in size or quality of a product, for a same or higher price for a given quantity.

From Wikipedia:

In economics, shrinkflation, also known as the grocery shrink ray, deflation, or package downsizing, is the process of items shrinking in size or quantity, or even sometimes reformulating or reducing quality, while their prices remain the same or increase. The word is a portmanteau of the words shrink and inflation.

[...]

Shrinkflation allows companies to increase their operating margin and profitability by reducing costs whilst maintaining sales volume, and is often used as an alternative to raising prices in line with inflation. Consumer protection groups are critical of the practice.

Shrinkflation is a rise in the general price level of goods per unit of weight or volume, brought about by a reduction in the weight or size of the item sold. The price for one piece of the packaged product remains the same or could even be raised. This sometimes does not affect inflation measures such as the consumer price index or Retail Price Index, i.e. it might not increase in the cost of a basket of retail goods and services, but many indicators of price levels and thus inflation are linked to units of volume or weight of products, so that shrinkflation also affects the statistically represented inflation figures.

Was browsing about as one does and found this community with a bunch of links to this type of music I hadn't known about before. Listened to a couple of the songs and I really enjoyed it!

It's !truecitypop@lemm.ee, or alternate links depending on where you're finding this from:

https://lemmy.ca/c/truecitypop@lemm.ee
https://lemmy.world/c/truecitypop@lemm.ee

And a plaintext:

!truecitypop

And direct link without the markabout to copy into your instance search to sub to it if so inclined:

https://lemm.ee/c/truecitypop

It's now under new moderation, and we should be more active moving forward. Since a lot of the community recommendation spaces aren't as active anymore, hopefully this space can get things going again.

Come share your communities, from whatever platform you are using!

You can also check out the updated list of community discovery resources here: https://lemmy.ca/post/5581032, or by checking the pinned post.

Cheers :)

A community for real (not satire) strange news!

Inspired by /r/offbeat because I always enjoyed the odd headline that made me think "huh, that's weird".

I came up with the idea for this community in the shower. What if I want to watch a movie with people from all over the world, and talk about it in a live thread? Live threads for sporting events and TV shows are pretty common, but I don't think I've seen it applied to movies before. The concepts are simple:

  1. Create an announcement post 2-12 hours before you want to host a watch party. This gives people time to find a copy of the movie, if they're interested in participating. If you have the means, you can also mention that you'll be streaming the movie on the official Discord server for those that don't have access to the movie.

  2. Create the live thread 30-60 minutes before the watch party starts. If you're going to be streaming on Discord, be sure to include the link to the server invite as well for anyone that wants to join in at the last minute.

  3. At the designated time, everyone presses play, and discusses the movie in the live thread.

Hello from your southern neighbor. I am a huge fan of Kids In the Hall, Corner Gas, Strange Brew, etc.. While these are older shows and movies I still have a great appreciation for Canadian humor in all entertainment mediums. I am surprised I haven't come across a community for discussing Canadian entertainment or something thereof. As I am not as versed as many on the subject I would be hesitant to create a community myself, but would enjoy having one to participate in and find new shows and whatnot. Just something to think about. Eh?

Hi everyone, after being on this platform for a minute I noticed there wasn’t a catchall “parents” sub. There was a few dad ones so I wanted to make one for everyone to come and chat with other parents. Chat and Ask Questions! All caretakers are welcome!

Infrared photography uses modified cameras, filters, and/or specialized film to capture near infrared light that is outside the visible range. Originally used for scientific, agriculture, and notably for military surveillance, but later was deployed for artistic effect due to its distinctive rendering of foliage and skies.
