I was a jackass (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) by Morningstar_bitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/div0@lemmy.dbzer0.com

as this post pointed out, I was an asshole, And I took trolling too far, genocide denial or harming the community was not my intention as I was trying to find reasons to troll hexbear through my two accounts, I do not represent Dbzer0 or AN in anyway possible, and that post doesn’t represent my views at all, it was just a shitty attempt at humour that went too far, you could consider this an apology, you have every right to hate me, but if you all have the space in your hearts to forgive me, it would be much appreciated. then again it were probably be best to just ban me as it’s not what I want, but it’s probably best for the community, I have learned from my mistake but i’d never be able to live with it, like anyone else Im not perfect

Just be careful what narratives you reinforce inadvertently, multiple genocides were carried out during WW2 in addition to the universally-known Holocaust (IIRC you pointed out several in your own post - Roma people, LGBT people, etc.) and it's not good to end up casually denying the Nazi colonization project in eastern Europe, for example. Millions of people were killed, it's not for you to use them as a cheap punchline to annoy "tankies" online.

This whole "trolling" episode really isn't the end of the world, it's hardly the worst thing anyone's ever done on the internet - especially because you seem to regret it. I'd just take a break from online arguments and spend some time with comrades offline, it really does make you feel better and help you realize that the whole "tankie vs. anarchist" fight isn't a productive use of your time.

Edit: OP replied the following, which I didn't see (because she's banned from my instance). My comment previously had a part that asked if she was a younger person, which I edited out because I didn't want to risk coming off as condescending.

Yes, I am young, and I should probably get off lemmy/piefed for a bit tbh, like a week, to gather my thoughts

OP, if you read this, I think we've all been there. It never hurts to take a break. There might be local pro-Palestine protests where you are, those could be a good place to get out and meet like-minded people to organize with.

This is from the OP post body right? What part of my comment are you replying to specifically? I'm a little confused by how this quote relates to my comment.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 6 points 5 days ago

Sorry, I just thought it sounds like a non-apology, but I shouldn't have said anything at all, especially under your comment.

[-] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Fair enough. I think you're right that she's somewhat avoiding responsibility in the post body, but she's a young person who's clearly embarrassed about an online outburst, and the apology was made immediately without much time for self-reflection. Therefore I think it's forgivable.

She seems to have realized the outburst was a mistake, and seems to want to take a break and reflect, which is good. Also, the person who fed her the WW2 line commented in this thread and came off like a borderline cryptofascist, so I do put a lot of the responsibility for the worst of the comments onto him. I'd rather give some grace to the person who showed regret and didn't intentionally post Nazi stuff.

That's why I said I shouldn't have said anything. I've been given plenty of grace, and by the same token, I can give grace.

On a related note, I think it's really easy to lose sight of that online, but it makes better communities when we can all make space for people to change.

@Alaskaball@hexbear.net do you think that, in light of this post, OP's ban could be reversed or turned into a temporary ban to possibly allow her to engage in good faith with our community in the future? She could always be banned again if this behavior repeats.

I bow to the lotus feet of the guru. ;)

Plus, it helps keep us from becoming calcified in our own perspectives -- if we let it.

I think if you find it in yourself to troll comrades instead of spending that time relaxing, or even sharpening yourself to be a better comrade, you could do with some time off the old computer.

that’s probably for the best

Or as a halfway measure... I read through RSS partially because it's more difficult to comment. It's not really productive for me to be dropping my immediate enraged reactions everywhere. So the RSS adds a few mouse clicks as a chillout buffer.

It's generally not a faux pas to do some light trolling in our own comms, but it is to go and do it in their own space. Also, own your mistakes, don't blame others like that for you own actions and especially not when it looks like snitching as well. It's going to make it hard for m@tes to feel comfortable around you when they see you throwing others in front of the bus.

I partly disagree with this point, only because it seems clear that OP didn't actually know much about WW2 and therefore was encouraged by another user to engage in genocide denial without realizing. Calling that other user out is useful to everyone who doesn't want to tolerate that kind of thing. OP should also accept their own culpability, of course.

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago

You of course are the instance owner, but I think people who encourage such repugnant behaviors (like whoever that is in the screenshot) shouldn't feel comfortable if that's how they're going to behave, and everyone else can simply not engage in genocide denial if they want to feel comfortable.

I agree they are still kind of deflecting, even accepting that they should out the other user.

No need to self flagellate. It’s not great to get so caught up in petty infighting that you lose sight of actual humanity of the topics you’re talking about. And also, it’s a shitposting forum that doesn’t need to be taken too seriously. Both are true at the same time. I hope you take some time detached from this to collect yourself because it seems you’re overly tuned into this and that’s a hard place to be in.

[-] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago

this It's not the end of the world, but you can do harm to yourself with this kind of stuff online. We've probably all been there.

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 16 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Might be worth re-evaluating what sort of people and narratives you're listening to if you recognize that the one post is genocide denial. I agree with the instance owner that one should take ownership of their actions, but I also very strongly believe that it's worth outing people encouraging saying such repugnant things.

I'd also be a little concerned that there were people ("tankies") who pretty calmly tried to explain this to you, you seemingly ignored it, but someone from your ingroup going "this is dumb and embarassing" shocks you awake.
