At least 25 countries have decided to suspend package deliveries to the United States, as concern grows over the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s looming tariffs, a UN body said Tuesday.

The Trump administration said late last month that it will abolish a tax exemption on small packages entering the United States from August 29.

The move has sparked a flurry of announcements from postal services, including in France, Britain, Germany, Italy, India, Australia and Japan, that most U.S.-bound packages would no longer be accepted.

The United Nations’ Universal Postal Union said it had already been advised by 25 member countries that their postal operators “have suspended their outbound postal services to the U.S., citing uncertainties specifically related to transit services”.

It said the suspensions will remain in place until there is more clarity on how U.S. authorities plan to implement the announced measures.

The UPU did not provide a list of postal services it had heard from.

Taxes do not pay for the USPS. The USPS is fully funded by itself.

“We want to have a post office that works well and doesn’t lose massive amounts of money,” Trump said during the swearing-in ceremony for Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. “We’re thinking about doing that. And it’ll be a form of a merger, but it’ll remain the Postal Service, and I think it’ll operate a lot better.”

The thing is that USPS is one of very few branches that is self sufficient and doesn't need trades to operate.

I wish they could fuck off and leave it alone.

I actually am more satisfied with USPS that those supposedly premium, paid couriers.

One great thing I love about USPS is that if the package arrives to my local post office ahead of time they will deliver it immediately. UPS and FedEx will hold it, because God forbid you would get the item sooner if you didn't pay extra.

First, on April 9, President Joe Biden’s administration threw its support behind funneling more tax dollars to fund the agency’s new next generation mail delivery fleet.

Second, the Postal Service acknowledged on April 2 that it has accepted $8.64 billion of taxpayer funds to offset some of its losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both steps seem to reflect the reality that the USPS cannot make it on its own without taxpayer support.
