Nine times out of ten the customer is busy wrangling their items or dealing with their kid. Instead of awkwardly waiting, hand outstretched, I put the change on the counter. I then start prepping for the next customer as we're timed on the whole process.

To be honest I never expected the BSA would attempt to reform itself as much as it has. Lots of places in the US won't recycle the supposedly "recyclable" plastics, it ends up in a landfill regardless of what you do. I remember all the educational initiatives about the importance of recycling when I was a kid. Turns out it was all just propaganda to make us feel responsible for problems caused by corporations.
Watering plants in the sink then leaving them for a bit can be convenient in some circumstances.
