I understand that in order for an object to maintain circular motion, its velocity vector must be travelling perpendicular to its position vector and constantly changing inwards, hence an acceleration towards the center of the circle. I know that the acceleration towards the center is typically caused by other forces, like tension on a string, and that these are called centripetal forces I believe? However, objects in circular motion tend to want to be away from the center instead of towards. A bucket of water tied to a string and twirled around in a circle will result in the water staying in the bucket: if the water is exhibiting circular motion, would it not thusly be accelerating inward, and thus escaping the bucket? I've heard that it's a difference of frame of reference, but even looking from out to in, I can't see how the water would be accelerating inward and yet remain in the bucket without support. Would there not be some force pushing the water into the bucket? And yet, centrifugal force is considered a fictitious force. I don't understand. I know I understand some level of physics but please explain it like I'm 5 because I can't seem to actually understand this.

I hate investing. Shit in general is made up bullshit and is halfway between a scam and gambling, but unfortunately I live in a society and have to play these games for my own survival. Anyways a coworker I generally trust recommended I get one of these for retirement or college funding or whatever: the concept is I pay towards a life insurance policy and after some time I can leverage it for cash to do stuff with. I'm not familiar with all the details of how it works: whether it's a loan with no interest or an early use of my policy's pay out. So, I was wondering if anyone here has used one in the past or knows of these matters and can provide advice on it.

I've had my mind on a google pixel (one of the used variety) for GrapheneOS but then i heard about Fairphones and I'm not sure which is preferable or if there's any other options.

Bit frustrating. Not every app, but a few I'd really like don't work because of this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

nb4 "just Google it," fuck off.

Saw a meme reminding me about primaries next year, and the top comment was about voting at primaries and for local positions. My problem is I have no idea how to find where or when these elections are taking place. I don't see them advertised or mentioned anywhere; hell, sometimes I only know an election even happened because of the news reporting after the fact, if I even hear about that. Last time I tried looking for a local election, I couldn't find any information on voting dates, locations, or times, nor any information on the people who were on the ballot. Because of that, I wasn't able to vote, despite driving around town the supposed day looking for booths in a last ditch effort.

Is there some website or something I can check for consistent, reliable, and complete information? I know these things differ by state, but a) I'd rather not give out my location, and b) I imagine I'm not the only one with this question: others could use similar resources for their states.

Accidentally thwapped my phone. It now has a line of white pixels in the middle that came up some time after thwapping. Heard this can be cleared with a lighter flame to the bottom. Is this true?

I have two wireless mice. One is a really good mouse that served me for years until it got too beat up, and now the scroll wheel doesn't work very well. The other is a newer HP mouse (specifically HP 280 Silent Wireless Mouse, product number 19u64AA) that is a bloody piece of shit and I hate it.

The HP mouse currently has two main issues with it. 1, it doesn't "sleep" or turn itself off after a period of inactivity. It just stays on, even if the usb dongle is disconnected, until the battery just dies on it. 2, it's clicking software/firmware had a fucking stroke or some shit. It only clicks on the active screen; so for example, if I have Firefox open and fullscreen, it will not click on the task bar on the bottom of my screen at all. It won't even register that it's hovering over something down there, it just refuses. That, and the middle click won't work. It's genuinely annoying, because the mouse used to work with no issues. I have no idea what caused this, and my conspiracy theory is that HP just kills mice that are alive for too long, because this is fucking horse shit. I do not recommend this fucking mouse at all for this.

What's funny is, I tried both my previous mouse (the one with the broken scroll wheel), and my desktop's wired mouse, and both worked excellently. No issues at all, unable to replicate the issues experienced by my HP mouse. Crawling through the journalctl logs don't show anything wrong with any of the mice, at least not that my noob ass could tell, and the HP support page for the 280 doesn't have a fucking user manual for it. There just doesn't seem to be one at all, not one I can find at least.

Anyways, /rant. How can I see what's wrong with the 280, or fix what might be wrong with it (or factory reset the mouse, if that's a thing)? Alternatively, how can I fix my other mouse's scroll wheel (Victsing Wireless Mouse model PC106A my beloved)?

Edit: Forgot to mention, on Linux mint 22.1 cinnamon, on an HP laptop oddly enough (you would think HP accessories would work with HP products). if you need any information, journalctl, inxi, my fucking social security number, whatever, lmk.

Edit edit (workaround found): So I reset my laptop, with the mouse still plugged in. Upon reboot, the functionality was still broken, and so was the touch pad. So I took a look at xinput list to see what was going on; my thought process was, maybe there's some interference between the mouse and touch pad. I went through, disabling things one by one to see what it did; a number of the things listed didn't seem to affect anything, but i found my mouse was 8 and my touchpad was 13. When I re-enabled my touch pad, suddenly everything was working as expected. I don't know why. I tried restarting my pc again; same issue, but this time i tried disabling and reenabling my mouse, and then suddenly functionality was restored. In both cases, the order in which xinput displayed things was changed, but they were changed differently both times; I don't know if there's a load order that's reflected in xinput or if it just reads things off as it finds them. Either way, for whatever reason, functionality with the mouse and touchpad have some interference when the mouse is first introduced. Though, the touchpad settings in the system settings doesn't seem to have any effect when the 280 mouse is plugged in; its set to be disabled if there's a mouse, which doesn't happen. I don't know what's causing these issues; disabling and enabling through the terminal seems to be the only workaround. There are other devices on my xinput list, I couldn't tell what each of them did, but disabling/reenabling them doesn't seem to have any effect.

Here's the output of my xinput list if anyone is curious about what I have going on:

One UI 7 has been disastrous for me, and not just because of preferences or layout. So far, I consistently get one or more of three issues:

  1. Home button (the round square at the bottom) ceasing to function. Seems to happen when I open any app, only actually triggers the moment I tap on the three lines next to it to bring up the open applications screen.

  2. Swiping up from home screen doesn't bring up the app list. Seems to occur whenever I press the home button from the application card screen (pressing the 3 lines button). Only consistent workaround is to go to settings and press home key (which behaves as expected).

  3. Lock screen showing what is basically a screenshot of my home screen as a wallpaper, despite having an actual wallpaper. Seems to occur whenever I tap the power button with an app open, but it's inconsistent. I don't have a workaround for this, it just stops doing that randomly it seems.

these occur very frequently; I'm fighting the UI every time i want to do something. besides that, I've had other issues too; mostly minor issues (visual glitches), but one big one. Earlier today, my phone only displayed the wall paper on my home screen and nothing else; no UI elements at all. Holding down the power button brought up the power options menu (manually adjusted that setting before this occurred), but tapping any of the power options did absolutely nothing. I wasn't even able to reboot or turn off my phone, only thing that shook it out of this siezed up state was tapping the side button settings bar at the bottom of the power options screen.

This has been the buggiest mess of a UI I've ever had the displeasure of using, and that's putting aside a few of my grievances with the aesthetic changes they made to it.

For reference, I'm on a (admittedly beat up) galaxy s21FE, and I do have F-droid installed but the phone is not rooted.

tl;Dr

screwworms are a species of fly that lays eggs in open wounds or orifices, after which the larvae will feed on the hatching site, typically causing more screwworms to lay eggs. they were mostly eradicated via releasing millions of irradiated, sterile males into their population, a thing we still do every month, but for whatever reason, they broke through the biological barrier keeping them back and have made it all the way to Mexico.

the infection of eggs and larvae is incredibly painful and horrifying, and while humans are much less likely to be affected, the agriculture sector will take an enormous hit to their livestocks if it keeps spreading.

Ah, you just woke up from a midday nap. For a moment there you were a little confused about where you were; it must've been a really good nap. You curl back up on the bench by the broad window out of frame, where the sun was warming your cozy blankets. Just outside, the trees sway gently in the wind, and a herd of deer munch on the grass. Your eyelids grow heavier, and you settle for going back to sleep. There's nothing going on today, so why not? You deserve it. Soon enough, you fall back into the world of dreams,

GAME OVER

You grasp at what you thought was a key at first, until you realize there isn't a key there. Someone drew a key onto the floor with black chalk. In hindsight you realize you should have noticed that sooner, like before you even reached down towards it, especially since it's not a particularly well drawn key; you could say it's rather shit, and you can't believe you fell for it.

it was an incredibly close shot. looks like he coincidentally moved his head the exact moment the shot rang, if he hadn't he would be gone. factors like windage also play a role. idk which outcome is worse.

This is the worst possible take I've heard this week, probably this year.

You would fuck over thousands of people, in addition to creating a bar of entry for anyone wanting to post a video or start a channel. Like I genuinely don't even know where to begin explaining how bad this take is.
