Moderators Wanted (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Hurts@lemmy.world to c/nba@lemmy.world

I've removed pretty much every moderator besides the one who replied to my post the other day and the new one I've added this week.

  • If you're one of the former moderators that was removed and want to be added back, again, reply here. I tagged you all 4-5 days ago and received no replies so I've assumed you have all either moved on from LW or do not want to moderate here any longer.

  • If you're a user here that has time to clean up shitposts, off-topic nonsense, and keep threads clean(ish) feel free to reply.

For the time being stream links are still allowed to be posted until I get cracked down on by someone else for it, so whoever is added you are not required to delete these at this time.

Game Threads (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Hurts@lemmy.world to c/nba@lemmy.world

Hey everyone, welcome back.

Between the end of last season and now we had a bot that was working for gamethreads, but it's since stopped working and the owner is not really interested in getting it working again.

If anyone is capable of setting up another bot or has a working bot for game threads please contact me.

If not, I am looking to add moderators that are willing and able to get up game threads (and moderate them if needed).

On c/nfl we tried threads for every game and it simply isn't populated enough to have that many threads and everyone decided to just do a Thursday/Sunday/Monday thread. What does everyone think about maybe a weekly thread for all of the games or would you prefer game threads for each individual game? (if you check NFL and see an "NFL bot" account posting the game threads, it was supposed to be a bot, but we couldn't get it going and log in and post them manually from it).

Edit - And lastly, obviously, part of the point in modding whoever posts these is so that they can be pinned by the poster.

If enforcing instance-wide rules is an issue for you, I have bad news about any forums you choose to join in the future.

Not only is it against instance rules, but the comment was reported multiple times for being hateful and offensive, if it doesn't personally offend you that is wonderful, it doesn't change the bigoted nature of the word, and that it does offend some people. I gave OP 3 hours to edit the comment before I removed it, if anything that's quite the opposite of Reddit moderation, where you'd simply have a comment removed and receive a ban instantly.

[-] Hurts@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Can you reword your comment to remove the word "retarded" please? Otherwise, I have to remove it as the admins have made it clear that this word is not welcome here due to its bigoted, hateful, and potentially offensive nature, and the use of the word as an insult is discouraged.

I don't know where he would get a ring.

He clearly still wants a pretty big role in the offense wherever he is, and has now quit on 3 teams in a row. I'm not sure why any contender with a good culture would want to add that. It's not like he's some incredible spot-up shooter that could fall back into a primarily 3-point guy, his career percentages are drastically better off the dribble. It's not like you're adding the corpse of Steph Curry here, who would presumably still be able to launch 3s at a high % clip.

I am dead inside. Thank goodness baseball and football can hold my attention through February without worrying about the dumpster fire Sixers

We encourage people to do this for Fox News links.

While Fox News isn't actively blacklisted at this time, our stance is that we do prefer other sources/outlets if the same story is available. As I mentioned in another comment, we read both of these articles and they contain basically the same content, so we left this post up, and that is basically how these posts are being evaluated at this time (checking to make sure they aren't misleading/reporting incorrect information).

Also as mentioned in my other comment, we do also understand that a lot of users do not want to click Fox News links and support them, so I do also encourage people to post links to other outlets in the comments so users can still read the article if they choose to do so.

[-] Hurts@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Our stance is that we prefer if people use other outlets if the same story is available elsewhere, although it isn't outright blacklisted (at this time).

We skimmed this article and the article posted above from BBC, and they contain basically the same information so we are leaving it up as it seems this article wasn't written in bad faith.

That said, we do understand that users do not want to click Fox News links and support them.

This is a constant talking point between the mods that is actively monitored and discussed on whether we should continue to allow it, but for the time being, we are just doing our best to encourage users to use other outlets and reading the articles and comparing them to what other outlets have reported to ensure they aren't misleading or reporting incorrect information before we decide to leave it up.

Fox News is indeed on our list of "not-preferred" sources, although not blacklisted currently. The cocept basically started with this chart, and us determining that we'd prefer if this community didn't constantly have posts from some of the most biased outlets out there, and really began as "we prefer if you use sources that aren't in the furthest left and furthest right columns", and we encourage users to only use sources from those columns if they're unable to find the same story from a different outlet. We needed to set something up in stone though, so as I said, there is a blacklist, but it's not extensive at this point in time but will regularly be updated as needed.

All of that said, I googled the article title and quickly found multiple other stories on this, but most of the top ones either linked to the Fox News article or to a Fox News local subsidiary with essentially the same article. Upon reading a few other ones, it appears this link and those contain basically the same content, so I'll leave this one up.

Most of these will have to be evaluated like above on a case-by-case basis, but again for anyone reading this, we prefer if you find another news outlet (and that isn't just Fox News).

Edit - The blacklist is open for users to view here, and the bot will automatically remove posts from any sources that are currently or in the future added to this list.

Edit 2 - Nevermind, the post/article title is incredibly misleading, the woman lived. Removed.

Not great, but good enough to check out.

This seems to be the floor for Apple TV shows, with the ceiling being "this is absolutely incredible". The quality of their shows (again, from the floor) is really only challenged by HBO

I think your number is a bit off.

Edit to reflect the true severity or the comment is getting removed for misinformation.

https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-chart

This is the chart I sent to the mods over a discord message.

Basically, anything in the middle three columns would be "preferred" and the furthest left and right columns would be "not-preferred". Again, stuff from the furthest left and right columns are not subject to instant removal and some could still fly if you can't find another site posting the content, but generally, it isn't that difficult to find another source that wrote an article about the same topic.

It would be ridiculous to think there are totally "non-biased" sites, the goal here is really just to not have constant posts from Fox News or the Huffington Post, let alone sites that veer even further in either direction, with the endgame being that this doesn't wind up being a massive echo chamber of a community for any particular political leaning.

Edit - Open to suggestions about said chart, and other sites users think fall into any of the categories

What we're looking for--

Being a news community, moderating here is essential. Moderation of news preferably requires leaving personal biases aside and allowing otherwise relevant content to stay up even if you disagree with it. Also, posting from less biased sources is always preferred.

The following teams still have not contacted me to be included in the sidebar. If you're a fan of one of these teams feel free to start up a community! I will help moderate it until more people come along to pass the community over to if you don't want the responsibility. (or if there is already an existing community please comment it for inclusion).

  • Atlanta

  • Brooklyn

  • Charlotte

  • Chicago

  • Cleveland

  • Houston

  • Indiana

  • Memphis

  • Miami

  • Milwaukee

  • Orlando

  • Utah

With r/nba closed indefinitely, more people will likely stumble upon this community, the best way to build a strong community, for now, is to also have fans and communities for all teams.
