This weekend, Amazon is premiering its $40 million Melania Trump documentary. It already seems to be a flop.

We're going to add insult to injury by messing up Melania's Amazon search results. Specifically, we're going to amplify the paranormal erotic thriller novel Melania: Devourer of Men so it ranks higher than her movie.

The book is perfect: It's absurd, the cover is ridiculous, and it's free, so we're not giving Amazon any money.

Currently, the book ranks #29 in Amazon search results for Melania. But all the other Melania results seem pretty weak (lol), so we can pull this off pretty easily. We just need people to:

  1. "Buy" the book (it's free)
  2. Share this post and get other people to "buy" the book.

That's it.

(Link is here in case your Lemmy client stripped out the other ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HN9XC1H . If it's not free, try buying from Amazon.CA)

Please share! Then we can celebrate as an erotic novel about a bat monster Melania Trump becomes a higher and higher search result on Amazon.

This is an update to this post.

This weekend, Amazon is premiering its $40 million Melania Trump documentary. It's pretty clearly a bribe to the Trump family.

We're going to disrupt the big premiere weekend by messing up Melania's Amazon search results. Specifically, we're going to amplify the paranormal erotic thriller novel Melania: Devourer of Men so it's high in the results. Maybe #1!

The book is perfect: It's absurd, the cover is ridiculous, and it's free, so we're not giving Amazon any money. (Fun fact: It's free because of YOU, the users of A Boring Dystopia. After your comments on the last post I reached out to the author, and they agreed to make the book free this weekend.)

Currently, the book ranks #29 in Amazon search results for Melania. But all the other Melania results seem pretty weak (lol), so we can pull this off pretty easily. We just need people to:

  1. "Buy" the book (it's free)
  2. Share this post and get other people to "buy" the book.

That's it.

Here's a link to the book, in case your Lemmy client stripped out the links above: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HN9XC1H

Please share and we can celebrate as an erotic novel about a bat monster Melania Trump becomes a higher and higher search result on Amazon!

Amazon is releasing a documentary about Melania at the end of this month. They paid $40 million for it, which is WAY above normal. The whole thing is pretty transparently a way to funnel a bribe to the Trump family.

Typically, there's nothing we could do about this. However, since this is all going to happen on Amazon Prime, we have a rare opportunity to disrupt this release. How? By making some other Melania content trend on that weekend.

After looking around Amazon, I think the best pick is this:

Melania: Devourer of Men

It's an erotic novel about Melania Trump as some kind of bat monster. It's absurd, the cover is ridiculous, and it would SO good if we could get this trending on Amazon on January 30, when the Melania doc comes out.

But I don't know a ton about how to do this. Does anyone have experience here? We'd probably have to branch out and get some anti-Trump Lemmy (and reddit?) communities involved.

Unfortunately there is only one way to get older generations onto a new app: make it the only place where they can see pictures of their grandkids

(I'm serious tho. When you have kids you can get their grandparents to install ANYTHING if you tell them it has pics of the new baby.)

Sorry if I'm mistaken on this, but I'm still new to self-hosting.

Currently I use SyncThing and I love it. My files are accessible to me wherever I am in the world, and it costs me nothing.

I'd like to move more of my life to self-hosted servers. I'm looking at leaving Spotify for Funkwhale. But if I'm reading the materials correctly, I'll need to set up a domain and pay some upfront costs to make my library accessible outside my home.

Why is that? Is there a way to make my costs 0, the way they are with SyncThing?

Yes, the bottleneck isn't software, it's hardware. We need phones with unlocked bootloaders

In my case, I worked for someone who only communicated via iMessage. When I got hired they said, "Either get an iPhone or figure out some magical way to get iMessage on Android."

I'm in a bit of a bind. I have to get TSA PreCheck, but I really don't want to give up my biometric data to the government. I've read that TSA PreCheck requires my fingerprints and possibly my photo (it's unclear). Interesting, though, is that when you're enrolled in PreCheck you do not get fingerprinted when passing through the airport.

So, I plan to fill in my fingerprints with superglue when I sign up for PreCheck. Weak fingerprints are a condition that affect a lot of people -- construction and farm workers, chemo patients, or some people just have it genetically -- so I don't think it will be too weird if my fingerprints don't show up well in the scan. From what I've read (FlyerTalk, Washington Post) you can still get PreCheck even if you have weak fingerprints. And, since they don't check my fingerprints at the airport, I'm not worried about ever having to match this scan.

My face is effectively a lost cause at this point, so I'm not gonna sweat that one.

My questions.

  • Is there any reason my fingerprint plan won't work?
  • The PreCheck sign-up process is run by private companies (Idemia, Telos, Clear) and I can choose which one to use. I am going to rule out Clear. Is there any advantage between using Idemia or Telos?
  • Is there anything else I should know before signing up?

EDIT: Wow, these replies are so useless, I had to check to make sure I wasn't on reddit!

I understand why we can't see stars during the day: the sun illuminates the atmosphere and effectively blots them out. But why can't we see low earth orbit satellites, which are not exactly "outside" the atmosphere? If they're inside, shouldn't we see them reflecting sunlight back to us?

I genuinely believe that car owners could be tricked into supporting FuckCars policies by a very crafty politician/campaign. It would work like this:

  1. Proclaim your love of cars. Loudly. "I want to make our city the best city in the world for drivers!"
  2. "What are the biggest problems drivers face today? Traffic and parking! Therefore... We need to open up roads and parking spaces..."
  3. "And that's why we're going to cap the number of cars that can enter downtown. With increased public transit, we can free up these roads for drivers! That way: more parking, less traffic, a better life for drivers"

Do the same thing for bikes:

  1. "These bikers want to share the road, but studies have shown that whether you use sharrows, plastic bollards, it doesn't matter: people still get hurt.
  2. And here's the thing: when a car hits a cyclist, it's bad for everyone, including the driver. Nobody wants to hit a cyclist. But the sad truth is that it might just not be possible to share the road
  3. "That's why I'm proposing that we make some roads car-only, to protect cyclists." [Crowd of drivers cheer, and you quickly say:] "Also we'll make some streets bike-only, for the same reason." [And then when you get in office, just be like "Yeah the highway is for cars"]

I'm available for speeches if anyone's hiring

This happens a lot: I apply for a job and they ask for my complete address. Why? I would understand if they just want to know what city/town I'm in: That has bearing on how easily I can get to the office.

But why do they need to know my street address?

The only thing I can think: Indeed/LinkedIn/take-your-pick is building a profile of me based on this info, using my street as a proxy for my income, credit score, or, ultimately, for my social class.

From now on, when they ask me, I'm just going to put a rich person's address. For this one I used a Brooklyn townhouse where Maggie Gyllenhaal and one of the Saarsgaards lives.

I'm unable to load my own profile in Eternity. Having this issue across multiple accounts. Tapping "Profile" in the sidebar brings up my profile but it's empty, no posts load. Anyone know how to fix?

Weird feed behavior (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago by mulcahey@lemmy.world to c/meta@lemm.ee

I just joined lemm.ee from lemmy.world. I was drawn to lemm.ee bc it federates with all the right instances.

But my feed is behaving oddly. (I view Lemmy through the Eternity app on Android.)

  • I'm seeing posts from communities I haven't subscribed to, even when I view my "Subscribed" feed
  • I get a weird error when I try to comment on some posts (in Firefox@lemmy.ml, most recently)

These issues didn't happen previously. Anyone know how to fix?

Should go harder IMHO. This ad from the National Congress of American Indians does a good job.

Gonna need to know more. What method do you use to lock your phone? Is it rooted?

Also: did they return the phone to you, or to your friend? Could it be your friend who went through these apps?

[-] mulcahey@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago

My only wish is that they made a smaller version. I realize that that's probably impossible, given their goals (smaller phones are probably harder to repair). But man do I miss small phones

I don't think the issue is "I want to do illegal things in public without consequence." It's more, "I don't trust the mechanisms of enforcement to use this power justly."

For example: Radio City Music Hall used facial recognition tech to identify and ban a lawyer whose firm was suing them. She wasn't even working the case. RCMH just issued a blanket ban. It's abusive.

And there are other risks. Stalking is a huge one. (Some creep takes your pic at the supermarket and now you spend a year of your life getting creepy messages and feeling unsafe everywhere you go.) Or there's the risk that people who participate in lawful protest will face retribution or punishment by corrupt law enforcement.

Kashmir Hill has a great book out about this now. You can read an interview with her here.

This article has so few details. How do we think they're pulling this off? Phones? A Flipper maybe? And then what?

You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. "Do you want to fill out the application manually, or upload your resume?" You select the latter and upload your resume. Indeed loads the next page: "Please fill out your work history manually." You scream 20 times
