- Non-Westerner that never have or realized alternative platform exist.
- Artist that dependant on mainstream social media reach. (some artists already have 100K+ followers there, fedi also have limited reach due to instance blocking, e.g. you're on Mastodon.art and want to reach Japanese audience (mainly misskey.io, but t was defederated on most of Western instance.)
- People with social network bubble outside Westernsphere, they only have exclusively local feed on their Twitter.
- People outside Westernsphere that already tried fediverse, but moving back as fediverse is still Western-centric or does not have their own community on feidverse.
- Community that does not have monetary power to invest on their own fedi instance.
Unfortunately, not everyone even aware of Musk stuff.
I'm Indonesian, and a lot of Indonesian people are using Twitter without even knowing what's going on with Twitter except for name change.
I usually recommend my friend to join local Misskey or Mastodon instance instead. But its harder when fediverse trending stuff is filled mainly with Western stuff. All existing instance are tends to whether ACG stuff or tech stuff with occasional local/global politics discussion.
It's a chicken and egg situation.
Not to forget, all Mastodon Indonesia instance are dead around a year after huge Indonesian migration from Twitter. It gives impression that fediverse is not a viable alternative.
I still have three different Twitter account, and all of them have entirely different feed mainly either Japanese ACG stuff, Indonesian local discussion, or to interact with private friends account. Almost all my friends still using Twitter for talking about Indonesian musics, politics, or other pop cultures that unrelated/disconneted from Western fandom.
Any social media is filled with various cultural/societal bubbles. Even fediverse itself is filled with cultural bubbles, mainly Western-sphere, JP-sphere, geek-sphere, or CN-sphere.
I believe when majority of people saying "Photoshop has this, we should do this as well" are not actually saying GIMP should create a total carbon-copy.
People loves easy to use interface, not carbon copy of Photoshop, even if they don't say that. They just don't know how to articulate their frustration better.
When Affinity Photo emerges as actual Photoshop alternative, no one complains regarding "not being Photoshop clone" because the interface is actually easier than Photoshop, while still being advanced software.
New GIMP user complaining about interface "not being Photoshop clone" is indicator that GIMP interface is not easy to use and intuitive enough.
No. Importance of UX simply means advance users can customize their workflow while making it easy to use for casual users.
Kinda like Krita or Blender. Both are not perfect, but the dev are working on it, together with the community.
Even GIMP dev also working on that, they have GIMP UX issue tracker here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/
"your program should look and behave exactly like this other program made by a corpo, because I've learned that one already"
Oftentimes established workflow is already simple. There's no need to reinvent this from scratch. Example: Npainter and AzPainter are heavily inspired by PaintToolSAI. Inochi Creator is a clone (with unique feature) of Live2D Cubism.
Wrong.
"GIMP is a cross-platform image editor ... Whether you are a graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, or scientist, GIMP provides you with sophisticated tools to get your job done." - gimp.org
Shape tools is a universal basic tool for any software that handle some sort of image creation or addition.
Photo editing, general image editing, painting software, page layout design, vector design, PDF editor, all of them have one.
Photoshop, Microsoft Paint, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Photopea, Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, ... all of them have shape tools.
Heck, even Microsoft Excel and Word even have one.
EDIT: Shape tool is planned, not yet WIP. Source: GIMP Roadmaps
Adding random information regarding Misskey. Misskey is specifically created to tackle Japanese internet culture and its own interpretation of fediverse.
For example, Misskey software allow the instance owner to run ads (usually community ads like promoting indie games, open for art illustration, or vtuber) while Western-made fediverse software are anti-ads.
Misskey also allows a lot of fun feature like social games, blogs, groups, emoji reaction, Misskey-flavored Markdown (people are getting wild with it).
It also have drive, which allow user to reuse existing uploaded image without using additional server storage.
Also, fun achievements!
Another reminder that we need to keep Crunchyroll from operating in SEA market.
We enjoy our anime being available on several platform at the same time. Whether it was on Netflix, Bilibili, Muse YouTube, or regional smaller platform.
I agree with top comment.
I'm Indonesian. Most of trending fediverse are Western related topics which It's not relevant to me.
There's one time when I randomly post about my country politics, and people on Mastodon just assume or comment using Western mindset.
Other than this Lemmy account, I mostly stick with hobby-related fediverse that mostly East Asian and Southeast Asian people (mostly Misskey instance)
Also, Indonesian is currently the highest user on Twitter, recently bypassed Brazil. People still use it as our local feed is... well localized. No Western-related discussion and much more comfy.
I wonder if people that JavaScript is indirectly named from an ethnic group in Indonesia.
Javanese ethnic -> Java Island -> Javanese coffee -> Java programming language -> JavaScript
Japan has so many unique store that operated in their country with region-locked apps/games.
As far as I remember, even DMM and DLsite already has their own game store on Android.
This is truly a win for Japanese customer and company.
For an OS that you need to install manually, it's definitely a lot.
Asian here and rice eater here.
Language doesn't work in absolute way, it could change its meaning all the time.
It's better to regain is neutral meaning instead of letting the racist weaponize neutral word.
Also, this mindset is also Western centric, go to Asia and people in Linux and car community simply use the word without any negative connotation.
Edit: By doing this, you're no different from imperial government who tries to make one standard of morality, which in fact further hurts Asian living in Asia. And as Indonesian, I'm hurt with your statement. Let me regain the neutral meaning. Don't speak for us.
