Like I'm not one of THOSE. I know higher = better with framerates.

BUT. I'm also old. And depending on when you ask me, I'll name The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask as my favourite game of all time.

The original release of that game ran at a glorious twenty frames per second. No, not thirty. No, not even twenty-four like cinema. Twenty. And sometimes it'd choke on those too!

.... And yet. It never felt bad to play. Sure, it's better at 30FPS on the 3DS remake. Or at 60FPS in the fanmade recomp port. But the 20FPS original is still absolutely playable.

Yet like.

I was playing Fallout 4, right? And when I got to Boston it started lagging in places, because, well, it's Fallout 4. It always lags in places. The lag felt awful, like it really messed with the gamefeel. But checking the FPS counter it was at... 45.

And I'm like -- Why does THIS game, at forty-five frames a second, FEEL so much more stuttery and choked up than ye olde video games felt at twenty?

Brand written big

What the product is written super tiny

If I could enshrine 1(one) regulation into law it would be to reverse that.

This meme¹ made the rounds here on Lemmy some days back.

And NSFW artists in the Furry fandom will often talk about how payment processors give them guff.

It holds true in lived memory, but like...

... Why?

I actually understand it for Google Ads and the like -- Google, Metabook, Bytedance et al. are really just advertisement companies with a side-gig in providing online services, and if you're an advertisement company, then "how other corporations perceive you" is what you live and die by, which forces the whole "corporate sanitisation" thing down on the users. -- So like. It does make sense, even if it's hateable.

But for the likes of Visa, and Master Card, and whatnot -- It doesn't? As I understand it their whole thing is they transfer money between parties and take a cut of the transactions. (and also give credit and charge interests on that and such) -- Why the fuck would they care what those transactions are about, so long as people are... Transacting, and thus giving them their cut?

¹ Reuploaded as an image because I couldn't be fucked to find it again.

I know this isn't quite the proper forum for asking this, but I can't think of any other place. Looking for a site where I can post little videos to share on Lemmy Meme Communities. A -- Non-youtube-y place.

Bonus points if it plays nicely with Lemmy, opening on apps and such.

Title. It's very easy to find films in the original language or subbed. The megathread has plenty. But I want to build up a collection of kid-appropriate and Brazilian dubbed films for my nephew.

The two mainstream ones are out of development. I live under rocks, but not so many rocks that I don't know this.

I was hoping for either a backup of them as they were, or some fork(s) that continued development.

On Windows, if you click MMB on some windows, your mouse cursor will turn into a little ↕️ icon, and then you can scroll by moving the mouse cursor up and down, with it going faster the further you drag away from the position it was originally at.

This is one (1) behaviour I miss from Windows. Hours upon hours of scroll-wheeling makes my joints quite tired.

But well. Linux is nothing if not customisable, so I'm wondering if there's a way to recreate this behaviour on it.

I'm on KDE Plasma.

Because they don't want the workers voting.

If you "can't go to the ballot because you need to work" you are a plebeian, and so they have a way of excluding you while technically not excluding you.

A lot of modern oligarchy is powered by these technicalities. Technically everyone has a "right to" participate in the system, but the whole apparatus is rigged in such a way that in material reality only the same nobility caste that has called the shots since the bronze fucking age gets to call the shots.

I don't mean BETTER. That's a different conversation. I mean cooler.

An old CRT display was literally a small scale particle accelerator, firing angry electron beams at light speed towards the viewers, bent by an electromagnet that alternates at an ultra high frequency, stopped by a rounded rectangle of glowing phosphors.

If a CRT goes bad it can actually make people sick.

That's just. Conceptually a lot COOLER than a modern LED panel, which really is just a bajillion very tiny lightbulbs.

The "collapse" is a cope. A non denominational version of the rapture. It being "all over" is something people dream of because oblivion also means an end to pain.

Society won't "collapse".

Life will just get shittier and shittier in such a slow, gradual manner that most people won't even realise it is happening. More work for less pay, less rights and freedoms, more repression, more wars, etc.

The only thing you got wrong is that the toilet extension would be a third-party thing, and Gnome devs would actively insult anyone who dared be upset they broke it.

[-] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 88 points 1 year ago

Yes

You can expect them to drop at maybe one more good product, as going public is what companies do when they want to raise a lot of funds for some project

But after THAT, when it turns out that the new product is just... Making money instead of making ALL the money, the investors will take over and from then on it's fucked.

But yeah RPi has alternatives now. No need to tie yourself to them when they DO sink.

I hope this becomes popular enough that a lot of major distros start adopting it as a default

Specifically because I want to see turbo-weirdos talk about how higher-quality cursors are "bloat" or "against KISS" for the next 10 years. 💀

Animator works on show. Show airs.

Show has no physical DVD/BD version

Show only exists on streaming service or on DRM-locked "buy and own but not really" services.

Show gets pulled from internet because some corporate license expired or some shit like that.

Show no longer exists anywhere other than the corporation's hard drive and pirates' seedboxes.

Animator needs to show their own work as part of a video portfolio to a prospective employer. A scene they made for a well-loved show is great portfolio material.

The corporation ain't sharing. Not until someone sues for the right to get a hard copy of the show they worked on -- Which given how the entire American state does when corporate interests fight any other interest, is something no one animator is willing to do as it'll probably not just drain their finances, BUT has a legitimate chance of fucking over every OTHER animator down the line.

Ergo.
Animator needs to pirate it.

In ye olden days, shows often aired only on TV and didn't get VHS releases. But animators would often just. Tape the show they worked on. Off of the telly. With a VCR.

Which in practice is the same thing as what the pirates are doing, creating a local copy of media that is airing, but corporations don't want you to realise that. So. Here we are.

I saw a post on the Mastodony side of Fediverse saying "Some people tweak their Linux installs in the same way other people tend to their home gardens" and it gave me 2d6 of psychic damage because it was just true and was also about me.

I don't even hop distros, I just like fucking around with the configs and shit of the distro I'm already at. It's -- How I procrastinate. Rather than do work I play around with reorganizing my work setup.

Methinks right wing preppers know exactly what they are doing and are preparing to rob and loot the community-building efforts that other people create communally after the fall. But hey, that's just a theory. 💅

EDIT: Also, MAN, a lot of straight up bootlicking in this thread. What the fuck kind of pirates are you? lmao

Having sniffed around the Linux community for years, I feel like whatever flaws SystemD has as a computer program are of tertiary importance when faced with the thing that really matters:

  • The developer of SystemD was mildly rude to some community members that one time. That means he is two hitlers and a stalin wearing a trenchcoat and everything he makes must be utter garbage.
