The embedded video seems bugged, but it should work if you click the archive.org link (title or thumbnail) directly.

I love how they used orange tinted film in parts to really emphasize the heat feeling.

This was an eerie one to watch due to how accurately it depicts our future over 60 years ago, if for a different reason.

Directed by Val Guest, this is a classic grounded hard sci-fi, like something you'd read out of an Analog Magazine of the era. The dialog is surprisingly snappy and well written, and the special effects are quite well done, if used sparingly. The acting is pretty damn solid as well. It's filmed in a fairly unique style in the way it flows, and while a slow burn with little action, I found the writing and concept compelling.

The story centers around a down-and-out British journalist for the Daily Express, Peter Stenning. Struggling to finish a story and constantly being bailed out by his friend, a new lead on strange happenings by the US and USSR sets him on the path to be able to write the story of a lifetime, certainly front page material, at least.

This was a labor of love by the director, who had to beg and plead to multiple studios before one finally gave him a modest budget to get it made, and I think he did a pretty fantastic job. Rotten Tomatoes seems to agree, as it received a rating of 86% there.

This film covers a pretty broad set of themes, including:

  • News Media
  • Social Class
  • Gender Politics (for the 60's, anyway)
  • And a couple other things that would spoil the story :)

If that sounds interesting, I highly recommend it. I came away from it being pretty darn satisfied and impressed.

That's good to know it can safely be skipped. I may return to it someday due to that, thanks for letting me know!

  1. Is an explanation for people posting angrily about democrats
  2. No they didn't? What?
  3. C/climate is the most active community on slrpnk.net and gets many more passerby comments from other instances. The timing isn't terribly unusual, especially considering the little preview text for the article explicitly mentions the biden administration dropping the ball on the environment again. Most people aren't going to read the article and only respond to the title/preview.
  4. The corporate democrats are clearly the ones who hold the reins in the DNC (hence how Bernie got fucked over), why is it odd to say that?

Before I played any of the witchers, I thought I'd REALLY like them, as the concepts and theme are right up my alley. But ultimately, I came away from the series with... it's just alright.

The first game I bounced off many times due to how slow the start is, and it didn't help that I installed a combat overhaul mod which makes the game WAY too hard. Once I got into the city or chapter 2, I started to enjoy it, but ultimately gave up on it in the second city due to the combat (moral here, play with vanilla combat! Probably would've had more fun). The story was alright, but didn't grip me too much.

Witcher 2 I managed to beat. The combat was fairly decent, and I thought the story and pace were a good improvement, with a beginning that was interesting in its own right. I was quite impressed with how much your choices could change things, and really got into the dice poker. I don't have too much bad to say about it, other than being disappointed that so many of the choices didn't matter in the 3rd game.

3rd game I bounced off similar to the first. I completely cleared out the first area, which left a bad taste in my mouth. I felt the game had unfortunately inherited that sorta directionless feeling so many open world games have, and found a lot of the side content to feel like filler, while the main story was utterly failing to grab me, and I bailed only a few hours in with the baron that has a problem with the baby. I utterly hated that POS but was forced to help him to continue the story, only for him to give a breadcrumb at the end, sending me onto the next breadcrumb. Progress in the main story just wasn't feeling meaningful, and ultimately I just didn't care about any of the characters, and gave up to play something else.

I may have enjoyed the 3rd had I given it more time, and I may have gotten further in the 1st had I not modded it, but with the 2nd game just being 'good' but not blowing my socks off, I figured I'd experienced enough to not really have much desire to go back to it.

Damn, I really need to get back into Mr. Robot and finish it, last time I saw an episode was nearly 10 years ago! Very cool to see it quotes Condor! ๐Ÿ˜„

I'm so damn pleased to have found this on archive. Three Days of The Condor is one of my absolute favorite movies ever.

Condor was originally going to be more of a generic spy film to generate some cash for the director, Sydney Pollack. But after the Watergate scandal, the general mood of the country shifted toward mistrust in government, so they tweaked the screenplay to make it a far more serious film with a message, which resulted in one of the finest thrillers of the 70's.

The acting by everyone involved is superb, the casting excellent, and the story excellently told. If I had to compare it to anything, it really feels like a 1970's prequel to the Bourne Conspiracy.

The story focuses on Joe Turner, a bookish CIA analyst codenamed "Condor" who works at the American Literary Historical Society in New York City, which is actually a clandestine CIA office. The staff members examine books, newspapers, and magazines from around the world to compare them to actual operations or to mine ideas, and things take off from there.

This is, in my opinion, the best movie I've yet posted to thus community, so if you're lookin' for something to watch tonight, I highly recommend grabbing some snacks and getting stuck in! :)

The drop in replacement is Sublinks, though it hasn't gotten any commits since augest, so it might be a while.

The most promising potential replacement is Piefed, which is already operational. It's ahead of Lemmy in some ways, and rougher in others, but the Dev is a chill dude :)

The paper, in a very funny but serious way, makes a strong case for the relative uselessness of the index finger, and it's recommendation for amputation if it's at all damaged and impeding existence.

Hmm... That could be an issue, you're right.

If it does get that bad, we'd gave to act more defensively by only federating with instances that have reviewed sign-ups and have received an endorsement on fediseer.

That would result in a more isolated experience, but if that's the only way to combat it, then we'll have to shift with the needs of the moment to keep it mostly humans we're interacting with, and to make the moderation workload manageable.

[-] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 13 points 4 days ago

The Fediseer project from @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com helps prevent bot farms from proliferating, as new servers require an endorsement from an already trusted instance to become 'legit'. And they can be marked as untrustworthy as well, causing them to be defederated fairly quickly, limiting its reach.

We also have a MUCH higher moderator to user ratio compared to corpo sites, with a range between 100 to 2,500 users per mod depending on instance, Vs. 250,000 users per mod on sites like twitter, so we can more adequately spot and deal with spam on the network.

[-] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 33 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Absolutely incredible breakdown of the problem. In addition to twitter, I strongly suspect Reddit is infested with a similar increase in bot accounts, which would explain how a sub I used to moderate there has some of the highest page visits its ever had, yet its actual user engagement hasn't changed at all, or even gone down.

Corporate websites, who have a financial incentive to allow the bots, have become completely unusable. The difference in interaction on Lemmy is incredibly stark, which goes to show that the fediverse seems to be far more resilient against bots since we can defederate from an instance that gets taken over, like cutting off an infected limb to stop the spread.

Hi everyone! I recently migrated the Documentaries community from Lemmy.world to our new home at Lemmy.cafe. There's a longer post as to why here for another community I brought over, but one of the big benefits was the ability for the Beehaw community to join in and participate, as they are defederated from lemmy.world.

The Documentaries community is... Nah yeah it's just documentaries, innit mate? But it's good ones! So if you like a good little doc here and there, in between yer netflix and yer podcasts, well by gosh this might be the community for you!

We've got all kinds; war docs, environmental docs, history docs, science docs, even got some weirder docs that'll make ya scratch your head as your mind absorbs what ya just took in, like a drug, but informational.

If that sounds like something that'd interest you, then be sure to check it out and maybe even subscribe over at:

Hi everyone! I recently migrated the MealtimeVideos community from Lemmy.world to our new home at Lemmy.cafe. There's a longer post as to why here, but one of the big benefits was the ability for the Beehaw community to join in and participate, as they are defederated from lemmy.world.

If you're familiar with the old MealtimeVideos from reddit, it's quite similar to that. But for those unfamiliar, the main draw of the community is that it collects high-quality vidoes, oftentimes edutainment, and provides the duration of the video in the title, so you can select one that will slot in with your breakfast, lunch, or any other meal!

Of course, you don't have to be eating to enjoy the videos, but meal watchers are the main demographic, I suspect.
