I hadn't heard of Jami, but that looks excellent, cheers for sharing!

Unfortunately it does not currently support audio sharing, but I'd recommend keeping an eye on Bananas Screen Sharing, as it may support it soon, from what I've seen in their Discord discussions.

You can play the game here on Archive.org, or you can download a copy from that page and play it in DOSBox Staging.

Here's all the physical documentation you'll need, such as the short story, how to play manual, and an in-world map (you'll have to draw your own, but it'll give you a rough idea of the land. If you find map making tedious, you could use a map someone else made).

Lastly, you'll need this interactive copy protection wheel when it prompts you for a combination in game, right before entering a simulation.

Good luck! :D

A Mind Forever Voyaging, by Infocom.

It's an old text adventure from the 80's with a particularly cool and oddly relevant concept: You take the role of an AI that's been meticulously raised in a simulation to truly become a general intelligence. The reason this project was undertaken was to eventually send you, the AI, into other simulations based in the near future to test the outcomes of various political policies of the new republican government, record your interactions, and report back to the engineers who created you.

The game's designer said that he created the game in response to the despair he felt from Ronald Reagan being elected.

I haven't gotten super far in it, but it has an incredibly well written short story in the manual that details all the events leading up to the start of the game, and so far the game itself is unlike anything else I've ever played.

Part 2 (available here) goes into other materials that protect against microwave weapons, such as space blankets and conductive cloth.

Likely very useful information for the near future.

NOTE: This is unfortunately a Youtube Free With Ads movie, which means Youtube will force you to watch it on the mobile app if you're on mobile so you cannot avoid the ads. Thankfully on desktop a good adblocker (uBlock Origin) will still work and avoid such nasty things.

Wikipedia Article of the movie.

This movie is chock full of excellent acting, witty dialog, and superb cinematography. It touches on so many aspects of history around the worker movement of the 1910's, including the IWW, famous Anarchists, and the troubles it faced.

It's quite unique in that it includes interviews with surviving people who knew John Reed and Louise interspersed with different parts of the movie, making it almost like a docu-drama, but with an incredibly high 32 million dollar budget (equivalent to 112 million today).

If you have any interest in unions, the early socialist movement in the United states, and a particularly well done romance, then I highly, highly recommend giving this a watch.

But be sure to have a good chunk of time to set aside, as the movie is 3 hours long!

EDIT: Hah, forgot I posted this here a year ago. Well, hopefully some new members will be able to see it ^^

LibreOffice is very good, and generally its Microsoft Office compatibility is decent. If you ever find it's causing problems, OnlyOffice is known to have better compatibility overall.

You can also try either of them on your Windows PC to see how she likes them, since they are available on all platforms.

This particular version is in an app image package, which requires no install, it just works after double clicking it :)

Open source software in general. Seeing Blender become an industry standard was awesome, and it looks like the Godot engine may do the same for gaming. Krita has evolved into a truly wonderful painting program (and not half bad as a Photoshop replacement), and Linux itself has come so far, having become a genuine gaming platform.

Quite happy about all of that. :)

TL:DW, JPEG is getting old in the tooth, which prompted the creation of JPEG XL, which is a fairly future-proof new compression standard that can compress images to the same file size or smaller than regular JPEG while having massively higher quality.

However, JPEG XL support was removed from Google Chrome based browsers in favor of AVIF, a standalone image compression derived from the AV1 video compression codec that is decidedly not future-proof, having some hard-coded limitations, as well as missing some very nice to have features that JPEG XL offers such as progressive image loading and lower hardware requirements. The result of this is that JPEG XL adoption will be severely hamstrung by Google’s decision, which is ultimately pretty lame.

Please be aware, Odysee was recently purchased by a Crypto company that also acquired an NFT company.

For more info, see my comment here: https://slrpnk.net/comment/9749921

I would not recommend investing any time or money into the platform, as it will inevitably crash and burn as the owners walk away flush with cash while everyone else is left holding the bag.

Peertube is not ideal, but it is currently the only alternative that isn't tied to a shady crypto scheme.
