I've never had a Manjaro install not break in the 4 times I've given it serious tries, all from updates. I could've avoided a few them by checking the forums first, but one was due to not updating for a couple months, which seem to set it up for failure when I did update.

I can't imagine cursing a newbie with it.

In comparison, Linux Mint has virtually never given me trouble, even if left not updated for months.

Should mention that Slrpnk.net hosts an XMPP instance which any Slrpnk member can access using their existing slrpnk lemmy login. You can access it via our Movim instance in the browser, or from any other XMPP client :D

I believe you should be able to create a room there that other people could connect to.

It's different from Discord in that you can't have a whole server with various different categories and rooms, it just has individual group chats (though possible to create multiple group chats of different subjects).

If having a single big server with different rooms is needed, I think Element (Matrix protocol) can do that.

Yes, unfortunately Kdenlive still has a ways to go when it comes to hardware acceleration. I think it's mostly the MLT Media Engine that's holding it back.

Are you selecting the 'Hardware Accelerated (experimental)' codecs in the Render menu?

Apparently Kdenlive doesn't fully utilize the GPU when rendering even when those are selected, but it should use about 30% of the GPU or so.

Hosting chats of the books on XMPP could be another option, which would allow for group calls as well, at least on Movim.

You're likely using the standard open source AMD driver, which should be fine.

At least for me, when I open Kdenlive (using the Flathub version), click on Settings at the top, then 'Run config wizard', it brings up a menu to let me select what hardware acceleration I want to use (since I have both AMD and Nvidia), and it seemed to default to using the VAAPI AMD acceleration.

What does it say for you in the Run Config Wizard menu?

What issue are you having, and what GPU & Driver are you using?

An excellent suggestion!

Modern cars are nightmares for privacy, which unfortunately includes 99% of EV's, with the only possible exception being the Slate, which has stated that they will not include any data harvesting tech in the car (hopefully they actually follow through on that claim).

I've personally avoided new cars for this very reason.

NOTE: This is unfortunately a 'Youtube Free With Ads' movie, meaning it's impossible to use an adblocker with it on mobile devices, as it'll force you to use the official youtube app.

However, uBlock Origin still works fine in a desktop browser, so highly recommend viewing it with that method!

It may not be available in certain regions as well (sorry y'all).

Holy shit. What a masterpiece.

This movie is based on the real life disappearance of 3 civil rights workers, and the search that followed for them.

Everything about this movie is about as perfect as it could be. Gene Hackman and William Dafoe (and the rest of the cast) give impeccable performances. The pacing is god damned perfection, and the writing is excellent. The music and cinematography are also top notch.

I don't want to spoil a single thing about this movie, but I can tell you enthusiastically that you will not regret watching it.

After seeing the movie, you could also check out some interesting background info on the events from the period itself, such as contemporary reporting on the event from CBS, and the documentary Summer in Mississippi from 1965.

This is apparently a seminal classic, but I've only just come across it.

It has surprisingly good pacing, acting, and writing for the time. Interestingly, it was directed by John Huston, who I personally knew from voicing Gandalf in the 1977 Ralph Bakshi animated Lord of The Rings movie, so that was a fun surprise!

The direction this one goes surprised me a few times, and I'm glad I saw it. Would recommend.

TL:DW, JPEG is getting old in the tooth, which prompted the creation of JPEG XL, which is a fairly future-proof new compression standard that can compress images to the same file size or smaller than regular JPEG while having massively higher quality.

However, JPEG XL support was removed from Google Chrome based browsers in favor of AVIF, a standalone image compression derived from the AV1 video compression codec that is decidedly not future-proof, having some hard-coded limitations, as well as missing some very nice to have features that JPEG XL offers such as progressive image loading and lower hardware requirements. The result of this is that JPEG XL adoption will be severely hamstrung by Google’s decision, which is ultimately pretty lame.

Please be aware, Odysee was recently purchased by a Crypto company that also acquired an NFT company.

For more info, see my comment here: https://slrpnk.net/comment/9749921

I would not recommend investing any time or money into the platform, as it will inevitably crash and burn as the owners walk away flush with cash while everyone else is left holding the bag.

Peertube is not ideal, but it is currently the only alternative that isn't tied to a shady crypto scheme.
