Hi! It’s me as usual.

I was wondering if there could be a way for lemmy when federating to at least fetch:

  • community names
  • community nicknames
  • usernames

I’m a fan of the fact that it doesn’t fetch everything because it would be a mess very quickly and it makes no sense to fetch a whole server because one user of your instance maybe wants to follow a single community from a super big instance… But names? So when people search for communities don’t need to “force” federation check using the exact syntax.

When not logged in, some instances have “all” by default while others have “local”.

Is there a config line to choose it?

Ye and if they owned servers they would need to pay electricity and internet connections to some capitalistic operators

If they had even solar panels they’d still buy them from capitalistic companies

If they even owned solar panel production they’d still buy materials from capitalistic mines

If they’d also buy the mines they’d now need some form of army to defend them or they’d need to pay some capitalistic mercenaries company

You understand that we have to start somewhere, right?

the second they don’t have enough donations to pay the bills the messenger will seize working

It’s a bit like worrying about donations to Wikipedia or the internet archive honestly. They are so big that probably a lot of people would stop them from failing.

https://signal.org/blog/signal-foundation/

I never read “VC funded” as someone who donated money and also was a VC. To me it’s always Venture capitalists investments asking for power and margin returns. Hence also it makes the product much more prone to enshittify to keep the numbers go up

Signal is none of this but yes, got a headstart by someone who happens to be also ~~a VC~~ a rich person?

Edit: I edit because I cannot find anything that links Acton to vc activities actually 🤔

Simplex is vc funded and doesn’t have a business model so nobody knows if it will ever be sustainable, I won’t pass any of my chats to it until they figure out their stuff.

Tuta too is for profit even if not vc funded. So the risk of easily getting sold is always there and tbh I don’t like giving money to for profit vertical companies unless necessary.

Btw no company is anti compliance. They fight in court but in the end they will comply, they have to…

I’d like to know if someone has been successfully hosting Lemmy with yunohost because I’m pondering to start doing it but it’s not available on arm so I cannot test it without start paying a vps.

So ye, are there any hiccups or weird behaviors?

I think that often the confusion when talking about solarpunk happens because solarpunk as per now it's a term that includes different subset of its characteristics without being necessarily superimposable with each other

2 examples:

  • can have solarpunk aesthetic produced in a non solarpunk way
  • can have solarpunk movements not relying on the solarpunk aesthethic

I think this reasoning applies well to solarpunk. It’s true that ethical consumerism doesn’t scale etc but we have to resist the urge to give money to the people who will commodify solarpunk just for cheap merch and media.

For example: game full of bad messages but made by a workers coop and ethically distributed > game with solarpunk aesthethic made by limited liability company that took or wants to take VCs money and run in the capital race

From mastodon to follow an account or a community on lemmy you use the @name@server format and there is no difference between a community name and a user-name

so i was wondering if anyone tried and checked what happened

[-] ex_06@slrpnk.net 13 points 6 months ago

B-Corp. But as long as they don’t show any kind of sustainable business model compared to their costs, ye the result doesn’t differ much

Hi! Another question about lemmy development.

Is lemmy working towards functioning more with discourse, flarum and nodebb federations?

I think that mastodon kinda fucked the fediverse and having a costellation of linked forums is much more powerful than microblogging so i'm interested in using lemmy as a forum more than a simple link aggregator

Techno-optimism means thinking that a technological solution will fix our issues. As solarpunks we, for example, are critical of a lot of tech uses and a lot of incentives that do not allow the best tech to emerge just by being “better tech” like a tech optimist would think. Check out Californian ideology stuff.

About longtermism: basically it’s caring less about the suffering of today thinking about working towards better condition for the people of tomorrow. In a stupid simple way: giving 10€ to research for fusion instead of using them to feed a child for one month because people will suffer anyway and the faster we arrive at the fusion the less people will suffer.

That said, I don’t think kurzgesagt is that much tech optimist, it’s just a channel that focuses on harder sciences so it’s easier to focus on “can this technology work” more than “can this policy work”

For the longtermism part, some video ye lol

I’ve tried using simplex but it’s simply (ahah) too slow for groups

I like it privacy wise but I think it’s better for small groups (<10) and 1 on 1 chats

Big chats are kinda a scam anyway, they should be forums lol

I won’t read their paper because every kind of DAO is the same in the end so I can generalize it.

They probably use a DAO form to raise money from people giving them back a token that allows them a form of digital ownership. Basically is what an association or a cooperative can do but if they do not actually build that coop or org it just stays a useless token in front of the law. Are they conscious of it? Who knows. Is it good? Ehhh, only if the people behind it are actually iron willed and will keep the mission in front of earnings because, as I said, legally the ownership is on them and not on all the token owners.

I’d avoid it. There are a lot of ways to pay associations to plant trees or ensure wildlife while also not feeding a bullshit machine :)

Nothing new under the sun. Free market nor consumers as a category will regulate themselves. The unsustainable merch just has to stop existing or at least the sustainable one should be subsidized.

Out of touch also in feeling like it’s funny to post this shit

Even if it was true, would still be a cringe meme.

I hope that OP is just young and naive and not an old who thinks the world is divided like that
