majority of the applications i use are installed via f-droid. I couldnt even use my phone if i lost them. For example the default camera is piece of shit that just turns the pictures black and doesnt even have good options, while the open camera has everything one could hope for.

i think the reason we do not have ubi universally is it would remove one of the biggest leverages companies have. If you dont have to worry about becoming homeless and starving to death, you can't be coerced into accepting any work for shitty pay. And people who dont have so many worries might start thinking about things beyond immidiate survival and how to distract themselves from it.

Those of you who still use windows for one reason or more, where do you draw the line about the shitty things microsoft is doing? By drawing the line I mean using some other operating system no matter how bothersome it might be.

Not judging or anything, i'm just curious where the general mindset is about it.

Since its looking more and more that popularity of linux is going to keep rising, I'm kind of worried about how corporations will respond. Way they do things has always been either just trampling weaker things or corrupting them if they cant. Has this topic been considered before in linux communities?

I really like everything about how linux related things work; how application repositories are full of nice things that fellow users have made because they wanted to and not necessarily to make money out of them. And the general wibe of being made for community by the community. And I want it to stay that way.

I think at some point, big corporations like microsoft or google will try adding their crap to the repositorys and try to make them used by majority. Maybe they will also try worming in into the development projects themselves and keep making things more compatible with their own systems or gain more influence over how things are done. Or maybe they are already doing this, i dont know.

I'm quite certain things will escalate more as linux usage rises, as it will directly mean less profits for the corporations (or less perceived profits, you know how they are). And if these things are not considered beforehand, it means the corporations will be able to do more damage before its reacted on and it might be too late by that point. At least that is how i feel about it.

I read there is something called firejail that does this, but according to the reviews on software manager, some have had it destroy their system or mess up their programs, so i dont want to risk that.

There was also something called bubblewrap, but it has no reviews at all.

How big risk does the firejail have and are there any other programs that are good or better for this? I already managed to mess up my system once (blackscreen after login. I think installing portmaster caused it or installing and uninstalling some software + its dependencies), but fortunately i had backup of the system so i could reverse the damage, so i'm a bit more cautious now.

Also, are there any other concerns that one should know about regarding sandboxing?

This seems like quite interesting game, kind of like combination of stalker and extraction shooters.

I tried the demo and it seems promising but it has several problems:

-lethality is crazy I couldnt make it out even once. The pve threats alone are really deadly. Then on top of that you have to deal with other players, while damage recieved from bullets is like in tarkov, so you will die really fast if someone shoots at you. You find a lot of loot, but i have no idea how valuable it is as i cant get out with it.

There are also A LOT of pve monsters, and ai controlled humans too on top of everything.

-anticheat malfunctions It keeps kicking me for doing nothing wrong while apparently real cheaters seem to be able to play without problems, at least according to people on forums complaining about cheaters. Maybe it just discriminates against me for using linux. Though it did allow me to play multiple rounds before it started kicking me. Now it kicks me as soon as i join the round.

Good things i noticed: -the game is quite unique

Enemies are not your average zombies or whatever gribblies they always put in games. So far i have seem these twisted invisible things that warp around, some corrupted looking people that mope around until you aggro them and then they also teleport at you, but in different manner than the invisible one. I have also heard there is some statue like enemies that work like scp-173 / weeping angel, and according to the mission enemy list, there are bunch of other monsters too. There is also these flowermen, who are basically human shaped things that blend in with vegetation really well. They just run around you and hit you and are generally awful even if there is just one.

The environment is quite nice. it looks good and has all kinds of anomalies visible in the distance. There are also these gravity zones which turns your center of gravity, so you can walk on walls or ceilings.

-gameplay feels nice

Actions feel smooth and i didnt notice any jankiness. Looting is nice and easy, no inventory tertris either, though i think i would prefer that over having to calculate volumes of items.

Shooting would be nice, if the mobs werent such bullet sponges. But hopefully they will adjust the balance on that.

There is also this nice system that is like scavenger system in tarkov, so you can use free random loadout to go in mission with. Not sure if you can keep it if you make it out. It does say "rent", so maybe not.

There is a safe pocket item too, though you dont get it in with rented gear.

Here is the mission select screen:

I havent been able to exlore the map very much.

It also doesnt let you exit until you have completed at least one mission, though just exploring enough also counts for that.

There are a lot of systems that feel a bit confusing at the start, as game has extremely bareboned tutorial. Once you are in the main hub, there are bunch of things there that you just have to find out yourself how to use.

there is also somekind of faction pvp thing going on. Missions for that look like your basic pvp maps with capture points and such.

So there seems to be a lot going on for this game, i really hope they fix the damn anticheat. I would add some pictures of the actual game, if it allowed me to stay in the round for longer than few seconds.

I need some advice regarding which distro to choose. I tried installing fedora workstation on my laptop as test and it seemed quite annoying to get the user interface right.

I dont mind the technical differences, in fact i'm looking forward to them as linux is more secure and better designed.

The problem i'm having is that i want the good things from windows desktop. for example; tray icons, being able to control filesystem easily with gui, shortcuts on desktop.

Every distro i have tried or seen has been really basic regarding this out of the box with very little customization options. I prefer not having to download million extensions for every little feature that might stop working at every major update or if developer doesnt feel like continuing.

I also would like to be able to easily backup customization settings so i dont have to do everything again if i need to reinstall. I like being able to easily customize everything so having a lot of settings is good thing for me.

I read somewhere about kde plasma and screenshots seemed promising and downloaded kde fedora. Haven't installed it yet but am I on the right track for what i'm looking for? Are there other even better choices? I'd like to nail this from the start so I dont have to reinstall later. I really dont want to wade through every possible distro.

Thank you all, you have been big help

Specificially https://en.z-lib.gs/

I downloaded some pdfs from there and according to virustotal and some pdf online scanner i tried, they have something possibly malicious going on in them. I already deleted them but i opened them in firefox pdf reader. I dont have acrobat installed.

Scanning my system with malwarebytes now, but nothing is finding anything wrong and I havent seen any suspicious activity.

Here is the analysis itself.

I'm starting to panic, please help if you have any advice

There used to be some application named vigilante that had alert when microphone or camera was activated. Then it's dev stopped updating it and that was that.

I know android should show some small icon when camera or mic is active, but that doesnt help me if i'm not actively looking at the screen at the time.

Do you know of anything that could still do what vigilante did? I'd prefer to know if something was trying to be sneaky. Or is it pointless even trying to do that due to something?

https://seirdy.one/posts/2021/03/10/search-engines-with-own-indexes/

Link to list of searchengines, provided by irenesteam in the comments

Old post text for history. This post turned out to become quite a mess.

spoiler

Previously I was looking for search engine that turned out it wasnt worth remembering afterall. As people helped, i thought its easier to just list every site its not. The site I was looking for turned out to be maintained by some rightwing assholes, but I thought maybe it could still be useful as it collects scrapers from many engines into one site. But since it apparently blocks lqbt domains, its basically worthless since who knows what else it blocks. Apparently anything those fucks touch is tainted.

I tried describing the site based on what I remembered and how it appeared to me. now it feels shameful even leaving it as context. The picture gets conveyed through the comments anyway for those interested.

I'm sorry it ended up like this, I should probably have done this much eariler and not give the site any benefit of the doubt.

So, instead lets make this into list of search engines so this post might have at least something positive about it. I already started gathering the list earlier as by product of the unfortunate search. It might be better to just scrap this all and start with new post but it would also erase what happened and the lesson learned.

I know there are lists already, but I dont think they all have every engine, especially smaller or newer ones. We could also gather information about engines' maintainers, stuff that helps determine what to expect from them. I'll try gathering it here on this post from the comments and if I find something myself.

Lets avoid all ai searchers since those ought to be in their own category anyway.

List of search engines

  • searx
  • brave
  • ecosia
  • mojeek

i consider unblockable ads to be direct attack on my psyche, trying to worm in and make me think in a way they want. I will never tolerate them and would rather see anything relying on them burn. My mind is my own and no one else has any business influencing me without my permission.

Thanks to reddit becoming such a shitshow, it pushed so many people to lemmy. I know all this has existed for a while now, but with all the users now its really wonderful. Also many people likely wouldn't have known to come here if they weren't leaving reddit first.

Now, I was never that active in reddit and it probably had started to go bad even before I joined first time so I likely dont have enough context to properly compare, but so far lemmy has been so much better than I have seen reddit be even before it really started to go downhill.

I think lemmy will also be better than reddit could ever have been.

Fuck hollywood.

This would be good opportunity for people to start new film studios and such, founded on more equal profit sharing. Let greedy pieces of shit shrivel and die without labor to exploit. There is no negotiating with those kinds of people as they will just try to find ways to force and manipulate people to do what they want.
