Duodi 2 Prairial an 233 de la Révolution, jour d'Hémérocalle: Buena Vista Club

  • Brush: Yaqi 26mm Synthetic Bingcha (Iced Tea)
  • Razor: GEM MMOC
  • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (23)
  • Lather: Australian Private Reserve Raconteur
  • Postshave: Naissance 702 Witch Hazel
  • Postshave: Pitralon Classic After Shave
  • Postshave: Nivea After Shave Balm

It is hayfever season, with asthma, headaches and stuffed nose. These are obviously the best conditions to enjoy an unobtainium soap. Aditionnally, and unrelatedly, it is the day of the daylily in the Revolutionary Calendar.

I got some leather (maybe I'm just primed to leather, because in BVWSC, we almost always have some sort of leather in the scent notes), and a generally very enjoyable scent. I was somewhat reminded of Chypre-Siam by Rogue Perfumery, but after verification, there is nearly nothing in common (other than civet, and that I like it).

I don't believe that I had the soap base figured out, even with a synthetic. Warned, I loaded heavily, but the lather still was rather bubbly. But it gave me a very serviceable shave.

In any case, thanks to @walden@sub.wetshaving.social for this nice discovery, and for a soap that I will unfortunately never use again.

Have a good evening!

Primidi 1 Prairial an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Luzerne

Already Prairial – oh how time flies by! Spring is almost over.

Have a good evening!

Thanks - reminder was totally needed!

Against the grain still feels pretty uncomfortable on my chin

I found the chin area the most difficult (you have to adjust angle permanently), so this is normal. Give it some time, and you will be able to do it without issues.

I can’t get a bad shave with 70ᵗʰ

Bad skillz! It's not that complicated: Less water, less soap.

a non-traditional sharpening method of 600 -> 10,000

How dare you, good Sir, how dare you!

It’s already happened. No way top players are not getting chatbot help

I guess that like in chess, we may be at a moment where human + AI can still beat AI (or human) alone.

I will maybe try and put my Claude account to good use and try to follow the LGs here

  • Brush: Yaqi 24mm Synthetic Panda
  • Razor: King C. Gillette DE Razor
  • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (39)
  • Lather: Haslinger Algae
  • Postshave: Williams Aqua Velva
  • Postshave: Nivea After Shave Balm

Repeat shave from yesterday. The blade is not the most efficient anymore – but I will probably still push it to 50, and then give up.

Have a good evening!

who doesn't like a coke when it's warm?

No compulsory drug tests where you are working?

AI has beaten humans in chess, go, and many other endeavors. When do you think that

  1. the first robot will win the lather games

  2. AGS (artificial generalist shaving) will be reached

Nice! I will test it to fall asleep!

[BVWSC Reminder] (sub.wetshaving.social)

This Wednesday is the day, so start blooming your smush!

I was wondering about the immediate sequel: Our Mayday shave is set, and I guess in June, there will be the Lather Games. Is this correct, and do we go on hiatus, just as we did last year for August?

4

It is time again to suggest your soaps for the May edition!

Proposals close on Friday 4, 12:00 MEST.

5

As of today, I still have not received the smush from @DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social, and this Wednesday is the last one in March. So, what do we do?

Option 1: We drop the club shave for March, and if we still receive the smushes, maybe convene twice in April.

Option 2: We shave with a soap we all have. We discussed this issue briefly on Free Talk Friday, and the only soap that has a chance to be the common denominator is Tabac. However, I don't know whether everybody here has it, and whether you would be interested in shaving with it in the first place.

Opinions?

3

It is time again to prepare for the Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club April edition, which will take place on April 16. Nominate your soap here!

For those new here: we choose a soap, the lucky proponent sends smushes out to all participants, and we all shave with the same soap on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. If you want to join: simply nominate a soap, and vote for a winner!

Proposal thread remains open until Sunday March 2, 22:30 CET (whatever that is where you live).

5

It's time again!

  • Grab your smush (mandatory)
  • Heat up your scuttle (optional)
  • Hone your razor (optional)
  • Moisten your brush (strongly recommended)
5

It is time to prep again! Please nominate your soaps for the March edition by commenting below.

This thread closes on January 31st, 23:00 Central European Time.

5

Prepare your smush, and choose your brush wisely!

A Look Back on 2024 (sub.wetshaving.social)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social to c/wetshaving@sub.wetshaving.social

Thanks to the newly acquired logging capacity of sotd.el (the oldest SOTD plugin for any reasonable^TM^ editor I am aware of), I've been logging every shave this year, and I thought: why not inflict the data on you?

I shaved 231 times in 2024 (roughly every 1.5 days). The move from reddit to lemmy coincides with a switch to straights – straight razors dominated my routine in 2024 (64.5%), though I still used my DE razors (22.5%) [though mostly when not at home], and occasionally I used GEM (9.5%) or AC (3.5%). If this continues, I will never again have to buy new blades. My brush collection splits between horse (45%), boar (32%), and synthetic (22.9%).

Let's go into the details, shall we?

Razors

Razor Frequency
Thiers-Issard 188 7/8 'Coq et Renard' - Straight 40
Parker Straight Razor - Straight 29
River Razors Kamisori - Straight 22
Koraat 14.2 Straight Razor - Straight 21
Ertan Süer L'Ours Russe (7/8th) - Straight 20
King C. Gillette DE Razor - DE 14
Edwin Jagger DE89 - DE 12
Greencult GC 2.0 II - DE 12
Dovo Barbarossa Stainless - Straight 11
Mühle R41 (3-piece) - DE 9
Star 1912 Type Razor - GEM 9
GEM MMOC - GEM 9
Feather Artist Club SS Kamisori - AC 5
J.A. Henckels Friodur 72 - Straight 4
GEM Flying Wing - GEM 4
Tedalus Essence - AC 3
Karve CB Brass C Plate CC - DE 3
Soviet Straight Razor Raketa - Straight 2
Merkur 34C - DE 2

My top five razors are straights, and it appears that I have somewhere a Friodur that I've forgotten to use.

Yaqi 24mm Synthetic Panda 14
Semogue 610 Boar 🐗 8
Yaqi Aqua 24mm Synthetic 6
Yaqi 28mm Synthetic Rock 6
Benny's 21mm Synthetic 4

2024 was once again dominated by the Semogue C3 horse brush. Greatly recommended!

Trivia

I had Claude explain the chi-squared test to me and apply it to my data. It turns out that the Blaireau de la République has become dedicated to Zingari Man soaps (a value of 100.40 with one degree of freedom, highly significant, p>>0.001).

I killed three soaps (Autumn Ash, Schafmilch and Marduk), and bought three others – which is net neutral overall (yay!). I unfortunately was less disciplined with razor purchases.

The BVWSC shaves allowed me to get to know several artisans that were unknown to me, and some impressed me highly. I did not yet jump the gun, though, and my thoughts for purchases are rather geared towards what I could possibly propose as not-so-well-known soaps for the club.

In 2025, one aim is to improve my honing skills – which yield as of yet rather unpredictable outcomes.

Thank you for attending my TED Talk!
