Plot twist: the ad is the real Tom Hanks, and the version calling it fake is an AI created by a rival dental plan.

Begun, the clone wars, have.

I think this type unauthorized use of somebody's likeness is going to define the next wave of AI image and video generation. Sadly a lot of people will fall for it because they don't know how good it is.

There was that teenager in Spain who was arrested for making nude AI models of his female classmates. I've had friends match with people on Tinder who then later send nude pics of them - AI generated - along with a demand for money or they will misuse it. It's going to get a whole lot worse before the public is educated about this.

But that's just the nasty small scale stuff. We're going to see celebrities and public personas in all kinds of questionable roles, appearing so authentic that average people won't notice it's deepfaked. Great.

It's going to be a scammers wet dream for a while.

Until legislators get caught up with it. Which they will because this is already being used for political misinformation and fucking up with very rich people's wallets. The only solution is to go full Butlerian Jihad on it and forbid ML image generation and LLMs altogether. Before that, more than one authoritarian government will use it to manipulate the masses.

[-] nucleative@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Well, it's open source... so that cat is not going back in the bag so to speak. Some technophobe countries will try to set up a bunch of laws but outside their borders the craziness will persist. I think the only way past this is to go straight through. We're going to see a lot of people manipulated.

The sex tapes are going to be wild. Choose your own adventure styles.

[-] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago

The next warning from Tom Hanks is going to be wild. "There's an unauthorized AI version of me doing... unspeakable things".

You guys are laughing right now, but as the only real celebrity on Lemmy, identity theft is not a joke! Millions of celebrities would suffer every year!

Imagine what would happen if some random Internet weirdo uses AI to impersonate me, super serious Academy Award nominated character actress Margot Robbie, and make me say extremely silly things that I would never say in public on the internet? Would you still think impersonating a celebrity is funny?

[-] AhismaMiasma@lemm.ee 24 points 1 year ago

Luckily for her, Margot Robbie has been blessed by a relatively harmless and actually kinda based Lemmy impersonater.

Or it's actually her and no one can be sure. I still want to believe.

[-] MargotRobbie@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago

I've never seen anyone trying to impersonate me on Lemmy, but if you ever see them, could you tell them to promote my latest movie, now also available on streaming, since I'm still on strike?

[-] Ataraxia@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

🤨 hmmmmmm

I also choose to believe. As a wise man once said, on the internet, no one knows if you're really Margot Robbie

[-] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

Probably not. Sorry Margot

That was fantastic! Ignore the voice, listen to the story. It's amazing!

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

It's wrong, but I can't say why.

[-] Synnr@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 year ago

Very slight off vocal inflections that you subconsciously know aren't him because you've seen the real him act in so many movies.

Plus, you knew it was a fake when you clicked it. If you hadn't then chances are it would seem like a regular ad you're trying to skip.

[-] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

It was the speed of delivery, the tempo.

When he was younger he rushed through his jokes but landed on the punchlines, as he got older he paused everywhere for emphasis because he knows he's funny and can sell it.

This voice was a mix with those characteristics canceled out so it sounds a bit less performed.

AI Version of Tom Hanks claims to be the real Tom Hanks, tells you to shoot the fake one.

[-] P34C0CK@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago

Hello. I'm Tom Hanks. The Dental Healthcare industry has lost its credibility, so it's borrowing some of mine.

How do we know that it isn't the real Tom Hanks promoting the dental plan, and the AI saying that he had nothing to do with it?

[-] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

How do we know it's the real Timecircleline who wrote this comment and not just an AI facsimile?

Would be hilarious if someone stole that video and replaced it with footage from Polar Express...

"I have nothing to do with that Christmas train. I don't even have a mustache!"

[-] Smoogs@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

It’s ok Tom, . Ryan Reynolds is talking to us right now about a financial plan. It was the first thing that showed up in bing so I know it’s not a lie.

[-] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Don’t listen to the fake news media! Come on down to the Celebrity Tooth and RV Superstore, endorsed by Tom Hanks himself, and get you a tooth, camper, or RV cleaning today. If it ain’t shining, we ain’t shining. And we’ll wash it again that day for free!

[-] LavaPlanet@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

The whole doom of AI has definitely gone in a different direction than I expected. I mean, maybe this is just the first act, you know, maybe they'll still work up to replacing and killing off human kind, but trying to pretend to be the popular kids and entertain us, wasn't on my AI apocalyptic bingo card.

[-] XEAL@lemm.ee 17 points 1 year ago

AI is a too widely used term.

It's not the same a self-aware AI entity than a dumb AI assited tool.

It's the same with the joke that AI's are taking the jobs that we want to do instead of the ones that nobody wants. JFC, there is no humanoid robot replacing manual labor, just trained AI software/tools/APIs that run on computers and perform some specific and somewhat complex tasks.

Well it's honestly a good step, you destabilize us by making it hard to trust anything is real once they really get cooking with deepfake porn and AI dental commercials.

[-] random_character_a@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I was expecting a tsunami of deep fake celeb porn from day one. Really surprised that wasn't the case.

What about that one video where Tom Selleck wants to take my house?

[-] Goo_bubbs@lemmings.world 6 points 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure that's really Tom Selleck.

Wait are you telling me that the movie Uncle Bus where Tom Hanks is converted to a bus is not true, it's AI and it's not him. My disappointment is immesurable and my day is ruined.

This is a masterpiece that I wanted to see: https://www.tiktok.com/@therealkidflow/video/7280929600958565678

(if somebody has a better mirror other than TikTok let me know)

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Awwe hell no, Tom! AI, my ass! You ain't gettin' out of being my dental hygienist for a day that easily, goddamnit!
