TL;DR by automating a repetitive task you not only reduce tedium but also learn a skill, and inspire others to embrace automation.

I appreciate what they're saying, but its basically changing the nature of the question:

  • They're saying "it's better to learn something new"
  • XKCD is saying "it's not always worth the time to automate"

There are many times I've known how to automate something, but the cost of doing it wouldn't be worth it.
