Is it like a couple of situations that are slightly awkward, hyperbolic but devoid of irony?

[-] JizzmasterD@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago

It like raaaaaiiiin on a fun-parade!

[-] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Or rain right before the rain dance ceremony?

[-] KittenBiscuits@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

We will make it ironic

If the popup menu goes away with a single click, it doesn't bother me too much. I'm okay with sites letting me know that they need donors to minimize ads, or just letting me know about cookie permissions.

My pet peeve is when they ask for your email to read a free article.

[-] bappity@lemmy.world 41 points 2 months ago

cookie menus that don't have a decline button but instead a" manage" button where you have to untick every single bit individually

[-] fitjazz@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 2 months ago

A website I used to frequent changed their cookie pop-up so that there was a message saying if you don't want to accept cookies to go to "manage settings" at the bottom of any page. The only way that you could close the pop-up was to click the "accept all cookies" button. The pop-up was so big it blocked the bottom of the page so you could never get to the "manage settings" link without clicking the "accept all cookies" button to close the pop-up. I have not been back to this site since they made the change.

DON'T FUCKING SAY ANYTHING MORE

[-] ne0phyte@feddit.org 19 points 2 months ago

It's not a free article if they require anything from me.

Still not accessible tho.

[-] Shape4985@lemmy.ml 19 points 2 months ago

Great tip: the reader mode in browsers sometimes bypasses this, letting you read the full article.

[-] Prox@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Also, uBlock kills all this stuff.

[-] Shape4985@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 months ago

Yep, ublock and reader mode make browsing a much better experience

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

Sure, it kills ads. It doesn't instantly give you access to every paywalled article.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

No, uBlock is a CMS for the browser; 9/10 "paywalls" go away if you block third-party scripts.

โ€œIโ€™m doing my partโ€

  • the author, probably
[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Medium's strategy there is probably part of the reason for writing it. I doubt they're oblivious. Probably not unintentional.

[-] letsgo@lemm.ee 13 points 2 months ago

Oh yeah, Medium. "HeRe's a 27 WoRd aRtIcLe wRiTtEn bY A FiVe yEaR OlD NoW GiVe mE AlL YoUr mOnEy."

[-] hexonxonx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 months ago

If a writer cares so little about their audience that they put their article on Medium, it's not worth reading.

The purpose of Medium is to sell advertising to generate as large a return for investors as possible. As a blogging or "journalism" platform it's mostly a scam for those who don't know better.

[-] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 months ago

Worse is when you're viewing in landscape and the UI isn't even on the screen and sometimes impossible to get to.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 8 points 2 months ago

To find out why the web has become unreadable scroll past the adverts. You have 2 more free articles.

[-] anonymouse2@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

In my best Shirley voice: Is this you being met-a?

[-] detun3d@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

Since it's a Medium article, if it's not paywalled by the author anyone can either close that popup and continue reading with the intended formatting or edit the adress from medium.com to scribe.rip for a cleaner reading experience.

Other than using Wordpress or building a static site wherever free hosting is available, Medium's offer for bloggers is still pretty solid if you care for their additional features and ease of use. If only they had ActivityPub integration... ๐Ÿ˜” Suggestions are welcome, as I'm evaluating my options to migrate a Medium "magazine" somewhere else. Write.as sadly doesn't cut it.

[-] kadup@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

building a static site

PLEASE yes, make a simple HTML website straight out of the late 90's and provide a RSS feed.

It will load fast, it will load on any device, I can actually focus on your content, I can read on any screen. Please do just that.

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee -4 points 2 months ago

is catbox a prank or something? are you all just coordinating in pms to pretend there's an image? is this some mass gasslighting campaign?

[-] tgxn@lemmy.tgxn.net 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

They have issues with a few ISPs, check your DNS, depending on where you are it might need a VPN. https://catbox.moe/faq.php

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

It looks like they don't like NordVPN's dns. I knew I should have swotched when my sub ran out last time.

No port forwarding for piracy :(

[-] simple@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago

it clearly loads fine for everybody else so it must be an issue on your end...

[-] rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee -2 points 2 months ago

I don't believe you.
