the internet would be unusable without sponsorblock + ublock origin

[-] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 30 points 3 weeks ago

it's so jarring when you have to use the internet on some public computer without adblock on it

I particularly like how you can filter out elements you don't like that aren't explicitly ads with ublock. Twitch will tell me when there's a hype train or a sponsor in a stream. Twitter wants a sidebar full of news and suggestions. I use a lot of custom filters

it's so good. if you have a fire stick or an android device for your TV you can get Smarttube for YouTube TV which comes packaged with sponsorblock too. (+no ads of course). mind boggling how anyone can use the website without this stuff

I hate segued sponsor segments even more than regular ads, so it was a glorious day when I finally installed it. Watching the video automatically skip a minute and the little toast notification come up is incredibly cathartic stalin-feels-good

I like when they give you a little burst of something interesting before the sponsor and I'm like "oh, you motherfucker, you tried, didn't you?

[-] Grownbravy@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

thank you for reminding me to turn it back on since i had to turn off some plugins to find what was slowing my shit down

I remember when ad sections used to be marked in yellow.

[-] joaomarrom@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

Very useful extension and I absolutely understand why people would want that. Having said that, in my personal experience, sponsored segments are sometimes the only kind of ad I find even remotely bearable, because at least sometimes the people whose videos I watch get to play around with the idea of peddling products and services. I'm talking about sponsored ads like the kind of stuff Comment Etiquette, i did a thing or YKS do. But that's very rare.

There's also isponsorblocktv, which is the same for tv's (run on docker)

Daily reminder that sponsored segments are one of the few legitimate tools content maker have to sustain themselves without tying themselves up with invasive data gathering and keeping a modicum of indipendence from the platform that hosts them.

[-] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago

Fine, but I don't need to literally watch the segment for them to get the bag, much less buy the products

Honestly most products that are advertized through youtube/podcasts have a sleazy vibe to them imo

[-] insurgentrat@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

Ads are a cognitohazard, no I won't subject myself to them and I encourage everyone else to avoid them.

Yes much of what we rely on is ad supported. I don't have an easy solution, still not damaging my brain by watching ads.

content maker

We generate more content in a single day than anyone could consume in a lifetime

Shout out to my content creators who don't use ads or seek subscription dollars though

Poets that died in misery in their 20s?

[-] SamotsvetyVIA@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

so dramatic.

also, literally me

[-] Pili@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

It's alright, the sponsors can't know that we skip their segment. It has been confirmed by LinusTechTips a while ago.

[-] heatenconsumerist@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Who cares? They get paid by clicks.

[-] dwindling7373@feddit.it 1 points 3 weeks ago

I'm sorry I don't have a list of all the people that care about this issue.

[-] heatenconsumerist@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

They still get paid. There is no issue to sepak of. They're not gluing your eyes open for that portion of the video.

[-] dwindling7373@feddit.it 1 points 3 weeks ago

You are wrong but you sound committed to it so have it your way.

[-] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Wait so they are gluing your eyes to the video? Damb that must suck

[-] dwindling7373@feddit.it 3 points 3 weeks ago

You get used to it after a couple of years.

[-] D61@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'm actually getting really tired of listening to ad reads for "Vessi's waterproof sneakers".

[-] dwindling7373@feddit.it 1 points 3 weeks ago

They are not real, they are whimsical Gods from a plastic plane of existence.

[-] heatenconsumerist@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

As somebody who has paid for adverts on videos, no; I'm not wrong.
