When switching into video mode from photo mode or vice versa the main lens' OIS kinda jolts it around which makes a rather loud click.

I'm on Android 14 and the latest Google Camera update.

Dammit, and I just saw this...

Torn about whether to proceed anyway!

EDIT - have installed 14 and no sign of the issue OP mentions - good news for me, not for OP, sorry mate.

Not sure whether the update is what's caused the issue though?

@FireWire400@lemmy.world: did the issue appear only with the Android 14 version?

The issue didn't exist for me on Android 13, the telephoto lens always made similar noises when changing zoom levels or even shaking the phone but apparently, that's just a thing that happens rather than a bug.

see @sanguinepar's edit, it doesn't seem to be due to the update

Now that you say it, it doesn't seem to happen every time. It actually may be depending on how I hold the phone or something?

Whatever the case it's a pretty weird issue still.

See if it's still within warranty and if it's the case send it back to Google, the lens might be faulty. If not, try to get a quote from a repair shop that can replace that lens. Your issue sounds definitely like a mechanical problem.

It seems fine otherwise, the "jolt" is just momentarily when swapping camera modes. Sorry if I didn't clarify very well.
