Pentagon was scrambling Monday to establish rules to guide U.S. Marines who could be faced with the rare and difficult prospect of using force against citizens on American soil, now that the Trump administration is deploying active duty troops to the immigration raid protests in Los Angeles.

U.S. Northern Command said it is sending 700 Marines into the Los Angeles area to protect federal property and personnel, including federal immigration agents. The 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines are coming from Twentynine Palms, California, and will augment about 4,100 National Guard members already in LA or authorized to be deployed there to respond to the protests.

Remember, article 90 of the ucmj only requires you to follow lawful orders. Turning your weapons on the same people you've sworn to protect is for sure an illegal order.

[-] arin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

That's why they are drafting new rules for it to be legal

[-] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

A goddamn shame to call myself a Marine. Any Marine executing these fascist orders are not Marines. They are fucking Traitors. The same goes for any other service member.

[-] Lightor@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

I was stationed in 29 for a while. They seemed like good people, I hope they still are.

[-] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I was in Quantico. Like you, I hope they still are too. Semper Fi, brother.

[-] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Every single soldier that participates in this should be tried for fucking treason.

[-] Azteh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Well if they are just standing around and not actually shooting people they are still "participating" but aren't doing anything wrong

[-] massacre@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Posse Comitatus - I haven't heard ANY news outlet mention it to date. Complete failure of the press.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

well, it's been out-loud-and-proud failure since 2016 at least (we're going to skip over Gulf Wars I and II and Afghanistan)

They are owned by republiQans, they print republiQan drivel and they have long ago abandoned any other pretense. Unless you're talking about the Opinion column where they pretend they aren't bought and paid for.

Besides the obvious terrifying escalation this seems like a purposeful gesture to throw every US marine veterans' sacrifices into a heap and piss all over it, I would be livid if I was a veteran of the US marines.

[-] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

The rules are already drawn up: it's not fucking allowed

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Are you some kind of subject matter expert or a professor at a famous university because you know more than a corporate news journalist somehow

Edit: /s

[-] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago

Corporate news journalists are purposely avoiding pointing out that the Posse Comitatus Act forbids this very thing from happening.

You don't need to be a professor to have heard of this law.

[-] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

The Posse Comitatus Act is pretty clear on this. Not sure why anyone would need to be a professor or even an expert.

The bar to gather accurate information yourself is really low with some basic critical thinking.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Yeah sorry was just "slamming" the press - should've used an /s

“Difficult” prospect? This administration has wanted to kill Americans for years. They finally have a drunk, stuffed shirt who will have no qualms satisfying his Daddy once given the order to do so. The days of Mattis and Esper are over.

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

don’t forget the supreme court has ruled anything trump does in office is not illegal. anything “official.” he’s full on “shoot now let got sort them out.”

[-] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Purely to keep the inaccuracy from spiraling: "not personally liable" is not the same as "legal".

They ruled that the person holding the office isn't personally liable for official acts unless certain extremely high bars are passed.
The act can still be illegal, you just sue the office of the president, rather than the individual who is president.

To him it's the same, but since it's not default legal, there's still lines for others to stop at. It's much easier to disobey an illegal order than a legal one.

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Does he think people will weekly slink away back to their houses and shake in their boots about what Trump will do next? This will only further inflame tensions. This guy wants to Crack down, thinks he can suspend the constitution, and rule with impunity, but what he's really gonna get is a civil war. Everybody loses in a civil war. Fucking countries like Russia, Iran, and anyone else who hates us are probably reveling in the current situation.

[-] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

I'm a 2A Advocate who DEFENDS SCHOOL SHOOTERS because we need GUNS to Defend from Tyranny and I FULLY SUPPORT THIS DECISION TO USE US MARINES AGAINST AMERICAN CITIZENS WHO ARE PROTESTING THE KIDNAPPING OF CHILDREN!

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

please include quotes or a /s … ?

[-] L0rdMathias@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

No don't listen to this guy. You joke stands firm and tall in the land of absurd punctuation and capitalization.

Do not ever become reliant on the crutch of /s. /S is for the comedically weak. It is false humor that can at best lead only to a light chuckle. If your joke needs /s in order to be a joke then it's not a good joke, and you need to take the L, study the mistake, then move on.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 1 points 1 month ago

You know it's sarcasm because they would never say "kidnap". If asked, those kids had it coming just like the dead babies that voted for Hamas.
