YPTB here starting to have the effect of mods front-running their own reports. Amazing stuff :)
The best disinfectant is sunlight :)
Since the consensus seems to be that I overreacted, I reversed the ban.
And that's how it's supposed to work folks. Cudos.
Yes.
Have you heard this one, @admiralpatrick@lemmy.world ?
Brah, I get how you're feeling, but your post will not be welcomed here. I commend you for trying though.
Always wait for the complaint before ya defend yourself. Always.
Wrong community, did you mean AITA?
To your point though:
Tldr: IMHO you overreacted.
While i am totaly on your side regarding the abolishment of car-societies, you banned/removed someone for "direct insult" who made a comment about a general group of people.
Especially since you (and most people on the sub) don't even argue for the point he is making fun of, this is clearly no direct insult against any particular person.
While his comment IS stupid (IMHO) and IS a strawman argument (so doesn't add anything to discussion but rather steer towards a direction I find non-constructive) It IS also clearly a hyperbol and IS clearly NOT directly insulting a particular person.
So even if I share your annoyment regarding such people, I think you went full reddit mode and abused your powers. Just my humble opinion, feel free to disagree
While I find it legitimate to ban people who repeatedly only derail and insult for the fun of it, I don't think banning people not getting the point or using graphic language fosters a good discussion culture or gets anyone to change their views or educate themself but just leads to a circle jerk. The point when to assume someone is acting in bad faith is not easy to define, but especially if this is a oneoff its definitely not reached in my opinion.
While you can mod your sub this way, I don't think it helps for reaching our goal and its not the moderation I would like to see.
judgment: PTH(uman)
Well, this comm is modeled after AITA. I guess mods can post their own acts and get judgement. Our version of "YTA" is "PTB" or "YDI" depending on who's posting.
Forgive me my unknowing, what does ydi stand for?
All of the abbreviations are listed in the community sidebar. YDI stands for You Deserved It.
Ah thanks, its hidden by default in my app so I rarley look at those. MB
No problem! The sidebar is well hidden on the app I use as well lol
Are you suggesting that disparaging the whole community and making blatantly fallacious arguments stops being toxic behavior just because he tried to take refuge in audacity? If it had been tongue-in-cheek I can maybe see that, but in my opinion his intent clearly remained mean-spirited.
Leave it up and let the community rip them a new ass. That's much better optics than deleting and banning.
He is not disparaging the whole community. As you said "there must be zero personal powered vehicles" is not a position the community has.
You can't say "fallacious arguments" AND "disparaging the whole community"
Only one of the two can be accurate. IMO it's fallacious arguments, which is not a good reason to remove or ban IMHO.
The reaction to stupid arguments should be good arguments or education, not removal.
You assume a whole lot about the person, if this is the only mistake he made. Maybe its just a 15yo who seriously doesn't understand the difference. If he has a (long) history of purposefully misunderstanding the point and derailing its a different story. If not you are banning him for a bad argument you don't agree with. That's absolutely power tripping reddit mod behavior.
so what other choice did I have but to ban him?
Removing the comment or just ignoring it were also valid choices. You did in fact "go full reddit mod", I guess.
YTA 🙄
Ye Power Trippin' Bastards
This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.
Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.
Posting Guidelines
All posts should follow this basic structure:
- Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
- What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
- Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
- Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
- Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.
Rules
- Post only about bans or other sanctions that you have received from a mod or admin.
- Don’t use private communications to prove your point. We can’t verify them and they can be faked easily.
- Don’t deobfuscate mod names from the modlog with admin powers.
- Don’t harass mods or brigade comms. Don’t word your posts in a way that would trigger such harassment and brigades.
- Do not downvote posts if you think they deserved it. Use the comment votes (see below) for that.
- You can post about power trippin’ in any social media, not just lemmy. Feel free to post about reddit or a forum etc.
- If you are the accused PTB, while you are welcome to respond, please do so within the relevant post.
Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.
Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.
YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.
Some acronyms you might see.
- PTB - Power-Tripping Bastard: The commenter agrees with you this was a PTB mod.
- YDI - You Deserved It: The commenter thinks you deserved that mod action.
- YDM new - You Deserved More: The commenter thinks you got off too lightly.
- BPR - Bait-Provoked Reaction: That mod probably overreacted in charged situation, or due to being baited.
- CLM - Clueless Mod: The mod probably just doesn't understand how their software works.
