Me when playing Balatro

Yu-gi-oh cards. Playing all 5 parts of Exodia results in an immediate win. Things were simpler back then.

[-] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

You don't have to play them, all five have to be in your hand to trigger the win condition. You just reveal them once you have them all (and there's no current "chain" of plays in effect)

wow that doesn't sound completely fucked at all

[-] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

It sounds more powerful than it actually was. Hand limit was 7, so you'd be sacrificing up to more than half your hand size for a small chance at an instant win. That plus a lack of consistent draw in Yu-Gi-Oh, it was basically a crap shoot. If you ran an Exodia condition deck, you'd maybe win 1/3 times.

But the memes are immaculate

no consistent draw? What did pot of greed do?

[-] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Pot of greed draws 2. You can also only have 2 in a deck. It's also banned in competitive play.

You draw two cards when you play it. No drawbacks or additional effects.

It's all also, like, one of a handful of cards that actually let you draw.

All I know about the game came from watching the first season (arc?) and a coworker who tried to explain newer things. I feel like you could earn a doctorate in the game with the convoluted rules. Need a magnifying glass for reading the text on the cards anymore.

i only ever saw that one arc as well, what has apparently later been dubbed "season zero" because there wasn't any card games in it. that was something they apparently came up with on the fly and it just stuck around. the writers didn't know anything about tcgs so the rules make no sense.

that first season is wild though, with the protagonist just challenging bad people to random games of chance with gruesome outcomes like "because you are greedy, i challenge you to stab through this wad of cash lying on top of your hand. you get to keep every dollar you pick up but if you're too greedy you'll nail your hand to the table"

No season zero is the anime that came before the one 4kids dubbed, completely different. Season 1 of the 4 kids dubbed anime is while the rules of the card game was still getting worked out so it was more of a fantasy show than a representation of the tcg. Also Yu-Gi-Oh started as a manga and "season zero" is a more acurate representation since the pharoh was literaly the king of ALL games.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 2 weeks ago

oh i've never seen the 4kids dub at all, i'm not american.

[-] Goretantath@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Don't worry, the first season is basicly a fantasy show, you literaly can target a part of card to make it crash..

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

look, all i want to know is when i get my free island for playing children's card games

[-] killeronthecorner@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago
