A trial could actually have a huge impact on US politics. The bipartisan consensus is that you don't go after your political enemies in court. Democrats never touched Bush or put Trump on actual trial, after all. Even Nixon was left alone after he resigned.

This is necessary for the function of the US state. The president needs to be able to break the law without worrying about personal consequences so he can control the proles and build empire and stomp down on the left flank, all without ever being subject to any personal inconvenience.

Putting Obama on trial might be the beginning of an actual partisan split. Democrats could stop thinking of Republicans as colleagues and start thinking of them as enemies, especially if the trial actually results in real material harm to Obama.

... or nothing ever happens and it'll be a friendly kayfabe show trial that everyone benefits from, and the bipartisan consensus will hold.

If past history is anything to go by, a lot of them will find a way to blame the left for Trump prosecuting Obama

I... actually doubt it.

While I agree about the Democrats being in denial, this would probably cause a real split.

I hope it does, but I'm just a bit pessimistic

They will likely just replace trump with vance. dems will never fight republicans

The only hope I really have is that it wakes a lot of people up to just how insidious the Dems are too. But knowing our media, it’ll be spun that Obama did it because he was just so afraid of a Trump Presidency and he will just continue to be a Reagan-like figure for the party

I think the aims of putting Obama on trial are stupid and even counter-productive to actual justice and will just enhance Trump's power.

That being said...

It could actually make the Democrats fight and certain sectors of the Republicans infight instead of just kowtowing to Trump all day.

On another note, Obama should be tried primarily for war crimes, but that's not what this is about.

Frankly, though, the ensuing trial will be a show trial.

I just wasted about a half hour of my time skimming through it. I remember upon first hearing about Russiagate that an infant could tell it was nonsense. Vague claims of hacking something or other, and being upset at Russia for exposing dirt on Hillary. The whole thing seemed manufactured.

This report seems just as manufactured and infuriatingly vague. It could be that it's too hard to refute such vague claims, or it could just be a whole lot of finger pointing (I'm leaning towards that one). Regardless, it's really not worth wasting my time thinking about it.

I am going to get the popcorn out to watch the US president cage match though. I doubt much of anything will come of it, but it's sure to be entertaining, and I like seeing the capitalist class doing some infighting.

Forgive my ignorance, but didn't they say more about attempts to influence on social media more than actual infrastructure?

[-] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 2 days ago

NO

They said that after the fact, after they that they "hacked" the election machines, or "hacked" something.

It was vague enough to be misleading, to some degree, but they were acting like it was actual infrastructure; the whole media ran with it.

"Influencing" an election isn't a crime in this day and age.

[-] bravesilvernest@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Gotcha! I vaguely recall this, but also remember it being more bluster than anything because nothing actually happened lol

[-] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Yeah, same, but to be fair, even I could be wrong; it was so long ago.

[-] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 2 days ago

Sorry for the angry outburst on my part, but this thing has really misled people.
