Would it kill them to make the place a bit nicer? Why does it have to be in the middle of a parking lot? I'm not really getting nice and fun vibes from a parking lot...

What do you mean? You don't wanna be in the middle of an asphalt wasteland that's at least 20° hotter than a grassy area with no shade or trees whatsoever cooking the concrete you will inevitably walk barefoot on during peak pool use time like summer? Won't you think of the shareholders profits for one second!

In my city they built an even stupider version of this a few years ago, not in a parking lot but in the middle of a busy road crossing.

At least there's some shade and greenery nearby, still better than the American Asphalt Fields

I'm going to have to admit that the shareholders' profit is something I rarely give half a shit about. It's a personal problem of mine, and it's something I've been working to correct. I actually had a breakthrough the other day, where for a brief second I thought "But will the rich cunts be able to make money off of my hard labour?". Some people don't think that's progress, but I'm very proud of finally being able to consider the feelings of literal pieces of shit.

Right? At least put in a thick hedge or something

They put together a business plan and started with a $1m loan, backed by their parents,

Must be nice to have those kinds of bootstraps.

Why does this seem so much grosser than just a public pool? Like, same water, same people, same everything but it just seems like there way more petri dish vibes here.

I'll wash my homeless balls in there, that's why

Dirty Mike and the boys say thanks for the ball wash pit

Right on. Pool in a mall parking lot is still gross though.

[-] bitchkat@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

They are indoor pools.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 16 points 4 months ago

Combining the image of a swimming pool and a mall, the first thing that popped into my mind was some of the backroom variants.

[-] WolfmanEightySix@piefed.social 6 points 4 months ago

Fortunately we won’t see this.

Also, why so anti tree/grass?

[-] fuzzzerd@programming.dev 4 points 4 months ago

The airport generated photo is totally misleading. This is about swim schools, not recreational pools like the photo. A totally different experience.

Also, all of these swim schools have indoor pools, again the photo is just slop and confuses the whole article.

I don't know what percentage is in parking lots versus in buildings, but once you leave the south, those pools are IN BUILDINGS in the strip malls so they can generate revenue year round. Note the article shows examples of inside pools, and that works better for harsher weather.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

2 to $3 billion dollar industry huh? They either are already or are about to start lobbying to shut down all public pools aren't they?

What a super quick way to spread things needed to be spread quickly?
