tech bros*, not tech people, there's a difference, please

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 68 points 2 months ago

tech bros .... modern day snake oil salesmen

in the 1910s it was a fast talking showmen on a soapbox saying he can cure galloping consumption with heroin

in the 1970s we saw them as fast talking car salesmen with checkered suits

in the 2020s they'll be identified as CEOs in t-shirts and jeans

why does the graph start at negative husbands

[-] SomeoneSomewhere@lemmy.nz 28 points 2 months ago

Extrapolating backwards can be just as valid as extrapolating forwards.

[-] tomatoely@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

I don't think there are any real techbros on Lemmy. They have to go to the crowd to signal, which is Twitter, Linkedin, and sometimes YouTube I guess.

There are lots and lots of AI enthusiast tech bro communities on lemmy.

[-] saltesc@lemmy.world 25 points 2 months ago

Tech people haven't noticed AI grow over time because it continues being slow. They've noticed continued creative use of Markov chains, though.

Every time it happens the computer is super duper smart and magical and stuff. But we've done this so many times now. Processor speeds increase > math from 1903 can be done faster > company incorporates it into everyday stuff and gets rich > people slowly realise it's not actually magic.

The first chain was literally a language model ffs and they barely had electricity.

Read a Microsoft article listing the jibs more likely to be replaced. Nb 2 was historians.

Tech bros are delusional 😂

[-] aow@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 months ago

I like the cut of your jib.

[-] Voyajer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

[-] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 17 points 2 months ago

Parents of a 3 month old who aren't quite sure what day/week/month it is.

[-] Bongles@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

(In the US) If it wasn't for Halloween being the other holiday people make their whole personality, Christmas would've bled into 6 months by now. As it is, some people end Halloween straight into Christmas.

[-] Hudell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

My Christmas tree is still up from last year.

Grow or die. Tech’s endgame is Logan’s Run (book version), actually.
