I made the mistake of joining .ml 4 years ago, because I didn't know. Then moved to world and now I'm here.

Definitively my best move was joining piefed, being able to actually block instances (unlike lemmy where you still get their posts via crossposts even if your instance defederated them) made it a little better in general.
Started from the bottom now we're here. 🎶
this thing's adorable, what is that
It is by artist "sherchle". I don't think it is from a tv show or anything like that. Oh and the car is from pui pui Molcar. I thought you meant the turtle
You’ve got me wondering what the photo is in the original comic
Let me just save everyone a click:
Is the old guy a real person?
Looks like a dozen possible old white guys.
the link above has the answer:
On November 3rd, 2017, Facebook [1] user cartoonfartcat posted a four-panel webcomic of a man deciding not to have sex with a woman after noticing a picture of Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on her dresser. As the man walks away outside, former Prime Minster Thaksin Shinawatra watches the man from his window.[2] The comic is a political cartoon about the Thai Political Crisis.[3] The post (shown below) received more than 1,700 shares, 400 comments and 10,000 reactions in a little over a month.

Never trust an AI summary.
Look at the window in the top-right of the bottom-right panel, he really is there
Are these dipshits still a problem around here? Since I joined, I've blocked hundreds of communities, instances, and users. I don't see them anymore
My first month on lemmy a mod on .ml sent me a death threat and banned me from a community for basically stating that given the option between Trump and Kamala I voted Kamala.
So that was a fun interaction
How many times did they use the word Capitalism and Liberal?
Yes
The ML admins are the developers and maintainers of Lemmy codebase and hosts of Join Lemmy. I have a feeling it's gonna be real hard to get rid of them.
We need block lists that are based on data gathered from user block lists
I just recently got temp banned for .ml again for saying I didn't like Stalin because of the purges and gulags and cult of personality dictatorship, so make of that what you will. Either that or just using the word tankie is treated as hate speech because it was the infamous "Reason: Rule 1" with no further context. I was actually having an enjoyable and possibly productive conversation about communist theory too, but apparently that's not allowed.
Piefed <3
I'm only somewhat familiar with lemmy.ml. What are the other two?
lemmygrad.ml is just another lemmy instance, but smaller and more specifically tankie than lemmy.ml
hexbear.net is a bit of a funny one. It was its own thing that was created when /r/chapotraphouse on reddit got banned, so it developed quite a separate culture. It is now federated with some Fediverse instances, but when it first federated there was a pretty severe culture clash that led to a lot of defederation (like, even besides the political disagreements). It is theoretically left-unity instead of Marxist-Leninist but I don't see a lot of evidence for that in practice
Hexbear is extremely tankie
It is, I just wanted to make the distinction between "tankie in practice but non-tankie leftism is technically acceptable" vs grad's "so tankie that they literally put a tank on the instance icon"
If I remember correctly, I had joined at a similar time. Not this account though, this one is fairly new. But I ended up going for Blahaj Zone and Beehaw. I went back and forth between the two, but in the end I think both of these were the right choice. The biggest issue I have with the latter is... It's missing some pretty big federation, like Lemmy.World notably, and that's kind of an issue for me. It makes the "all" timeline really quiet and kind of dull.
In the end, I think Blahaj is my home for many reasons, but I do remember Beehaw being quite recommended back then. It's a great community and I really do enjoy their principles, in terms of rules and everything. When I was looking for what community to join, and people talking about it on Reddit, there was a bunch of, it doesn't really matter, which is bullshit, it actually really does matter, in my opinion, but, uh, yeah. Beehaw came up enough for me to go there on my first account.
As for the drama, I have missed out on all of it. Like, people are talking about Hexbear, I have no idea what happened with that. In terms of drama, all I personally remember was the kind of like big panic over the threadiverse because of the mass influx from Reddit users, which I am on one of but that's pretty much it. That being said, I personally do remember that most people had already some kind of apprehension towards Lemmy.ml. At least in my corner. Lemmygrad I've only learned of recently.
Beehaw was great until I realised how dogmatic they are. There was a thread asking disabled people if they were happy with their disability, and I replied no, I was not.
Anyone who was not happy with their disability was banned or something, ridiculous.
Switched over to SJW since I appreciate the openness of the admins and community. Naturally this community requires a lot of special attention and there have been multiple times where SJW admins have had to step in to assist

Welcome to MoG!
Meanwhile On Grad
Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!
What is a Tankie?
Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.
(caution of biased source)
Basic Rules:
Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.
Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.
Apologia — (Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.
Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.
Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.
Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.
You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.
