Watching my kids take swim lessons I am super impressed how they KNOW how to teach. They have a slow steady progression of techniques that build on eachother. Same with gymnastics. Build strength, technique and confidence. No need to terrify kids.

In a similar vein, the social emotional learning they are teaching kids is great.

I wanna know more about the social emotional learning

I love that boomers will post this and say everyone younger than them is weak, but then they will call the cops if there are kids outside having fun.

Which is weird because they were the same ones that locked us outside until the streets came on.

I love how genx think shit like this is a flex. It’s not. It’s called child abuse.

Lots of lead in the blood, makes folks permanent risk takers and aggressive. Surviving those time “intact” is definitely something.

Look at that form, this is definitely not his first time tossing a child into a pool

Unc really makes it look effortless.

My parents are from the 60s (early gen x)....and they took me to swimming lessons. Like sane adults.

The more people I meet, the more I realize that I'm lucky to have my parents.

I got lessons as soon as feasible due to this. My grandpa did this to my mom and now even in her 60s she can't go past her waist without visibly panicking.

There is a home video of me when I was like 6 happily swimming around in a lake with my family, equipped with flotation devices. I was having a great time, laughing and clearly enjoying myself.

Then my grandfather comes and forcibly removes all of my flotation devices and drags me out deep to force me to swim back to "teach" me how to swim. The whole time I was being dragged out I was shouting "No! No! Not like this!"

It's a wonder I don't have a fear of water.

My dad did that to me and I chose death. Dumb fuck sure showed him.

[-] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago

My parents did the same...they are from the 70s and 60s...

[-] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My dad did the same. I was 5 and it wss a 12ft deep pool. I chose to swim, I do wonder would he had jump in if I hadn't dog paddle my way out of the pool. I think he let me drown. Its a traumatizing experience for a kid. They wonder why we are all fucked up and filled with anxiety. Shit like this didn't help.

That literally happened to me. Dad and uncle tossing little me between themselves in waist-high (to them) sea. One of them missed, and I slipped under and drifted away.

It was years before I would go near any water. Eventually got over it, but... yeah.

If they come back they’ll come home stronger and if they don’t you’ll know…

[-] fubbernuckin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 days ago
