The author writes:

When I initially got the idea for making an ordinary alignment chart, that most fundamental of memes, imagine my surprise when I saw it hadn't been done yet at all! I searched for "alignment", "grid", "lawful", "neutral", "chaotic", "dungeons", "dragons", just about any word associated with this and it hadn't been done. Well, never let a good meme go to waste so I've submitted one at last! (Or at least there's an editor note affixed pointing to where there is one on the site).

For those of you who may have your own ideas where members of the Garfield cast align, allow me to offer my reasoning.

• Liz is lawful good because being a vet she is looking out for the welfare of her patients as well as strictly enforcing her rules.
• Grandma is neutral good because she just cares about everyone disregarding all rules and norms, even to the point of giving up her own Thanksgiving to help Jon win the heart of the woman he loves.
• Odie is chaotic good because although dumb as a sack of hammers his heart is definitely in the right place.
• Jon is lawful neutral, trying his best to adhere to the master/pet paradigm even if he's too clueless to realize it's actually reversed.
• Lyman is neutral, so neutral in fact, he just gets dropped from the strip without explanation or warning because he provided nothing to the dynamic.
• Nermal is chaotic neutral, always throwing a monkey wrench in Garfield's life by his mere existence.
• Irma is lawful evil, and admittedly this was iffy for me, but I see her as running a business by her rules, even if those rules are nauseating.
• Garfield is neutral evil, in it only for himself, but not so stupid as to ever, say, kill Jon, otherwise he loses his meal ticket.
• Binky the Clown is chaotic evil, because hey, clown.
